Gaylord
The Gaylord Golf Mecca held its 3rd annual media day this week, with writers, reporters and raters coming in from a variety of media outlets and states. Kevin Frisch, of Resort and Golf Marketing Services, was the point man on this project while working closely with Paul Beachnau, Gaylord CVB's Executive Director. This year's trip featured Rick Smith's Threetops and Signature courses, the Otsego Club's Tribute, Vanderbilt area's Black Bear and the newly renovated Michaywe Pines course.

Treetops
While a 21 golf course inventory has been the source of their prominence, it is the Par 3 Threetops that has garnered the nation's attention, with the ING Par 3 Shootout. The area was also featured in the original Big Break show on the Golf Channel http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show5/index.html . Finally, the first course, Robert Trent Jones Treetops was the course that jump-started the Gaylord Golf Mecca http://michigangolfer.tv/2001shows/show21/index.html . Rounding out the Treetops inventory is the Smith Signature, Tradition and the Tom Fazio Signature.

The affable Scott Head is the Director of Golf at Treetop. Plucked off a course in Hawaii a number of years ago, by Rick Smith, Head chose Gaylord for the quality of life he wanted for his family. Otsego Club
Keith Gornick, the "Father of the Gaylord Golf Mecca" is bowing out after having shared the ownership of the resort with his father Alan, for over 50 years. The Otsego Club will be auctioned off on October 25th. Gornick, says it is time to retire and spend some quality time with his family. Gornick, one of Michigan's most eligible bachelors up until four years ago, has a 3-year-old daughter whose mother is from Germany. He wants to spend five months of the year in Germany and the remaining time in Gaylord. The Otsego Club boasts "The Classic", designed by William Biddle and "The Tribute" from the fertile minds of Gary Koch and Rick Robbins. When the club changes ownership, one of the places that Gornick might raise a glass of the bubbly is on the 18th tee of the Tribute. The launching point is one of the ski hills at Otsego and gives the golfer a view of an 18th fairway that is unmatched in Michigan.

Black Bear
Since its very beginning, Black Bear has struggled for its place within the Mecca. Just 40 miles south of the Mackinaw Bridge, Black Bear has been like a lonely stepchild. Of late, it has new ownership, a marketing mantra of "an enjoyable and affordable golfing experience" and the decade long TLC of GM Jack Clark. The course was in fabulous shape and provided a terrific golf experience for the group.

Garland
Garland has four courses and more than 50 years of service awaiting the golfer. Herman and Hildegard Otto added a golf course to their corporate retreat and Garland golf was born

Marsh Ridge
Marsh Ridge, Mike Husby's first course design, was in great shape for the group. Marsh Ridge is a collaborative effort with owner Scott White, golf professional J.T. Aude and Erica Schneider as the assistant in the pro shop. Larry Bowden, who purchased it a couple of years back, controls the resort rooms. Bowden is in the process of renovating the existing buildings at Marsh Ridge and making them into condos. He has sold three thus far.

The Loon
Wes Morgan is the Director of Golf at the Loon. The Loon, a Mike Husby design, gets its share of the Gaylord golf market. It's finishing hole, modeled after The Heather course at Boyne, keeps players coming back. The Loon is the most watched golf course on The Michigan Golfer Television Channel, with over 14,000 downloads this year.

Gaylord Country Club
The Gaylord CC is founding member of the Gaylord Golf Mecca. The course staff features Dan Webster a PGA Golf Professional and Paul Holmes, CGCS Superintendent. As one of the oldest clubs in the Mecca, it continues to benchmark the quality of experience you will find throughout the area. Black Forest and Wilderness Valley
This Tom Doak course is visually stunning and challenging. In addition, the 16, 17 and 18 holes will test your stamina, as they are all demanding. Wilderness Valley has its share of Michigan history as Al Watrous had a hand in building it. Watrous, former pro at Oakland Hills, and the winner of the Michigan PGA Championship nine times, also had an eye for good golf course design as well.

Owner, Mike Bieber has pumped in two million plus into upgrading the facility. Doug Bell, represents owner, Bieber and the six courses under the Osprey flag.

Michaywe Pines
Michaywe Pines, one of the original members of the group. The original architect, Don Childs, has recently renovated Michaywe Pines, a 31-year-old course. It is a visually stunning course that has also has some bite. The course has hosted two Michigan Amateur Championships as well as other high profile tournaments. Judy Mason is the Director of Golf. You can count on an excellent pro shop at Michaywe that is filled with tasteful golf wear. Gaylord Golf Mecca
There are many names that pop up when discussing the Gaylord Golf Mecca; Keith Gornick, Dave Smith, Harry Melling, Paul Beachnau, Larry Bowden, Tom and Daune Weiss for openers. However, one person that was certainly in the mix is the late Dick Weber. Keith Gornick hired the young Cornell graduate because of his love of skiing and golf.

RYDER CUP COUNTDOWN-The 70's -with Bill Shelton and Michael McCafferty as "The Haig"
The 70's were once again a downright nightmare for the Brits as they continued their losing ways, with five losses. Jay Herbert, Jack Burke, Arnold Palmer, Dow Finsterwald and Billy Casper all took turns at the helm as Ryder Cup captains, winners all. For the first time, the event was held in Scotland, Peter Butler became the first participant to make a hole in one, Nicklaus was so struck by Muirfield that he named his course after it, format change brought the total number of points to be decided to 28, with eight foursomes, eight fourballs, and 12 singles, team captains would use the "envelope, a process where a player's name was sealed in an envelope in the event either team was reduced to 11 players due to injury or health reasons. Finally, the 70's brought all of Europe into play, with Jack Nicklaus being a very strong proponent of this change.

JOAN GARETY INDUCTED INTO GRAND RAPIDS HALL OF FAME
Former Michigan State University golfer Joan Garety of Rockford is among a group of six sports figures that was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame on August 24. The occasion marks the second such induction ceremony for Garety, who was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2005 http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/ghf/joan/ .

Garety has competed in amateur events in Michigan and throughout the country since her graduation from Michigan State. She is a longtime member and 13-time club champion at Egypt Valley Country Club in suburban Ada. Joan has always been a great credit to womens golf in Michigan and throughout the country, said Steve Pastoor, general manager at Egypt Valley. She's been the benchmark for womens golf here for 25 years and an inspiration to so many young players who have gone on to success in golf.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY SCOTT HEBERT

Scott Hebert, one of Michigans winningest professional golfers, shot 4-under-par 68 in the final round and then won the $70,000 Michigan PGA Professional Championship on the third extra hole at Eagle Eye Golf Club in East Lansing Wednesday. Hebert, 36, is the head golf professional at Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. Hebert is the reigning Michigan Open Champion a title he's won six times - but the win at Eagle Eye was his first appearance in the Michgan PGA Championship. This is much to my surprise, said Hebert, who began the final round seven strokes behind second round leader George Bowman. I started off the day just trying to get into the top-15. Then things started going real well and I noticed I was only a couple off of the lead, so I changed gears.

I've only been a member of the Michigan PGA for eight months now, so this was a nice start.

Along with the first-place prize money, Hebert wins a spot in next June's Buick Open, the PGA Tour event held in Grand Blanc. A field of 199 Michigan PGA professionals competed in the Michigan PGA Professional Championship.

BOOK REVIEW-THOMAS "TOM" BENDELOW: THE JOHNNY APPLESEED OF AMERICAN GOLF"

Stuart Bendelow, grandson of Tom Bendelow, never had the opportunity to meet his grandfather, as he passed away before he was born. However, he probably knows more about him than any living person now, with the research he has put into his book. The book is a must read for golf historians and many golf course owners in Michigan. Tom Bendelow had a profound impact on the game of golf, leaving his mark on hundreds of courses in Canada and the United States, with many of them here in Michigan.

My curiosity was piqued when I did a Michigan Golf History series a number of years ago http://www.michigangolfer.com/history.html and the name of Tom Bendelow kept popping up as the designer of Michigan golf courses. I tried to find some information on him, but there did not seem to be much that had been written. Stuart Bendelow contacted me about what I had done and we began to correspond.
