MG ON THE ROAD
Grayling-Grayling CC and Fox Run CC
We started out our Labor Day in Grayling. While we did not get a
chance to golf Grayling CC or Fox Run, we did wave as we passed by on our
way down state. Grayling has much to offer with its golf, canoeing,
fishing and during the winter, skiing and snowmobiling.
http://grayling-mi.com
Hartland- The Majestic at Lake Walden
Bill Fountain, one of the owners of The Majestic was in great Labor Day
spirits. The Majestic, a 27-hole layout that features Jerry Matthews
golf architecture surrounding Lake Walden, was up in rounds against last
year's Labor Day, which was also a beautiful weekend. They also did
some substantial work on expanding their clubhouse this year. Bill
indicated that they would be putting together a fundraiser for Katrina victims
some time in the next couple of weeks. For those that have not had the
opportunity to visit this great property, be our guest at http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/majestic/
Manistee- Canthooke Valley, Cutter's Ridge, Heathlands, Manistee Golf
and CC and Hemlock
Always exciting to get over to the Manistee area to see what the golf
folks are up to. While golf grabs a nice share of the recreation
business in the area, it has some serious competitors. For openers, the Huron
and Manistee National Forests in Michigan contain nearly a million
acres of recreation area. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/pages/aboutus.htm Therefore, campers, hunters, hikers, and off road vehicles are omnipresent at the National Park.
With the presence of the Manistee River, the Manistee Lake and Lake
Michigan, boaters populate this area here big time. Manistee has an
impressive armada of charter boats available to fish Lake Michigan. We saw a
salmon catch that was very impressive.
Three years ago we stopped by Manistee National Resort and met Doug
Bell and the new owner, Michael Biber. At that time he promised some
changes at the resort. Mike Biber has followed through with his promises
and Manistee National is a beautiful resort, one we enjoyed our staying
at very much. Everything is first class and the appearance of the
resort from US 31 is a knockout. You can catch our interview with Doug and
Mike as well as a visit with John Kennedy of Hemlock at http://michigangolfer.tv/2002shows/show23/index.html Manistee National features 36 holes Canthooke Valley by Gary Pulsipher done in 1994 and Cutter's Ridge by Jerry Matthews later on in that decade. Also, we want to give a special thanks to Chris Haar for his help and information while on site.
Other Golf Manistee courses include; Bear Lake County Highlands, built
in 1964, Manistee Golf and Country Club a Tom Bendelow course built in
1901, with the second nine built by W. Bruce Matthews in the 30's and
the Heathlands, one of Jeff Gorney's great works. The Hemlock, while in
Ludington, it marketed as part of the Manistee experience. Hemlock,
owned by the Kennedy family, is a Ray Hearn design and a spectacular one
at that.
Packages for the above can be found at http://manisteegolf.com
Thompsonville
We drove 30 miles out of our way to have a Tennants beer at Crystal
Mountain's bar and restaurant and ran into Brad Dean and Roger Jabara. We
had just watch Brad Dean play some great golf the previous week at
Shanty Creek at the Michigan PGA Championship where he finished third. His
very successful golf schools, both at Crystal and Fox Hills in Plymouth http://crystalmountain.com/golf/index.cfm?fuseaction=golfschools just
finished up another year. Roger Jabara, who we bump into at Bellaire's
Country Chalet restaurant from time to time, had another great year
working at Crystal Mountain and while winding up word there is now
starting to think about his ski shop at Schuss Mountain.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
"THE HAIG" TO APPEAR ON WEST WING
Mike McCafferty, who appeared as "The Haig" in a series of Ryder Cup
special shows with Bill Shelton, passed on the news that he will be part
of the cast on the 2nd episode of West Wing that will air on October 2.
McCafferty has appeared in ER, Six Feet Under, The Shield and was on
his own series the Invisible Man for two years. In addition, he will be
seen in Mike Judge's latest film, "Idiocracy" that opens this November.

Bay Mills Open
We have two shows up now on the Bay Mills Open; the first centers on
the action at the tournament and the second show on the closing ceremony.
Join our host, Tim Hygh as he interviews, winner Mike Harris, Tribal
President, Jeff Parker, Canadian Tour Commissioner , Richard James and
Tournament Director, Rob Lussenhof.
http://baymillsopen.com/video05.html
Native American Cup
The inaugural Native American Cup was captured by the Sault Ste. Marie
Tribe. However, the real winners were the students who will be
receiving scholarships as a result of the tournament. On hand, to provide a
role model for golfers, students and sponsors, was Notah Begay III. Notah,
a graduate of Stanford University, is a four-time winner on the PGA
tour and twice an All American. We have produced four videos to view, 1)
an interview with Notah Begay III and tournament chairperson Henry
Boulley Jr. , 2) a clinic with Notah Begay III, 3) an interview with Bernard
Bouschor of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe and 4) an interview with Jeff
Parker, Tribal Chairman of Bay Mills Indian Tribe.

HAIL TO THE CHIEF AND NOW LOVE TO THE CHIEF
Neal Kotlarek of PAR Excellance Magazine passed on the latest that Ty
Love is now at The Chief. Love, for many years the head professional at
the Thoroughbred at Double JJ Ranch, will be working as head professional at The Chief, giving Dave Hill, some much needed help. Hill will continue to oversee The Chief, but will be spending a little more time at the new Hawk's Eye. Hill indicated that revenue is up slightly at The Chief and up 36% at Hawk's Eye. Tom Izzo is the focal point of their advertising campaign this year, with his face on billboards and TV ads.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Neal Kotlarek of Par Excellance for the
info.

19TH HOLE
The college football season is back in full swing, and in Michigan what
could be stronger than the U of M/ MSU rivalry? If you're not a Michigan or MSU fan, just substitute your favorite team. Have some fun!
Jake was dying. His wife, Becky, was maintaining a candlelight vigil by
his side. She held his fragile hand, tears running down her face. Her
praying roused him from his slumber; He looked up and his pale lips
began to move slightly.
"Becky my darling" he whispered.
"Hush my love," she said. "Rest, don't talk."
He was insistent. "Becky," he said in his tired voice, "I have
something that I must confess."
"There's nothing to confess," replied the weeping Becky, "Everything's
all right, go to sleep."
"No, no. I must die in peace, Becky. I...I have been a Michigan
State Fan all of my life!"
"I know sweetheart," whispered Becky, "let the poison work."
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Dr. Jack Minzey for a nice kickoff to
the fall season.

GOT $2500?
Developers John Lang and Marc Krakow, in partnership with Private Air
Magazine, recently announced they are looking for at least 100 golfers
willing to donate a minimum of $2,500 each to play in a one-day golf
tournament that will help raise $1 million for the victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
To be played at the innovative new private residential and golf
community on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay on Saturday, Oct. 1, the
tournament will play an important part of ³the $1 million formula² that will
be comprised of tournament participation, corporate sponsorships, and a
matching grant of $250,000 by an anonymous donor. One-hundred percent
of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to victims of the
country¹s largest natural disaster that hit the Gulf Coast on Monday,
August 29.
Lang and Krakow said that a special account has been set up at
Huntington Bank in Traverse City for corporations and individuals who might
want to make contributions to the fund-raising effort. All funds will be
donated to specific designated charitable organizations that have
earmarked programs going to Hurricane efforts, including the American Red
Cross, the National Christian Foundation, and others.
Additional information on the tournament can be obtained by calling
Kelly Mebert, LochenHeath¹s director of member services at 231-938-9800.

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH ACQUIRES STANLEY THOMPSON COLLECTION
A collection of memorabilia ‹ including drawings, newspaper articles,
photographs, correspondence, contracts and agreements ‹ of renowned golf
course architect Stanley Thompson (1893-1953) has been donated to the
University of Guelph.
"Stanley Thompson was a Canadian original ‹ a genius and an eccentric
who has an almost rock-star cult status among golfers who understand and
appreciate his creative and challenging approach to golf," said Michael
Ridley U of G's chief librarian and chief information officer. "The
availability of this collection will help Canadians better understand a
remarkable individual."
Thompson, a skilled designer and golfer, attended the Ontario
Agricultural College and worked on more than 145 golf courses in Canada, the
United States, the Caribbean and South America, including three of
Canada's top golf courses ‹ St. George's in Toronto, Highlands Links in
Ingonish Beach, N.S., and Capilano in Vancouver. He also co-designed the
course at Guelph's Cutten Club, which he once owned, managed and resided
at.
A co-founder of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and a
member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, Thompson was one of five
brothers who represented one of the most talented golfing families in North
America. More: Lori Bona Hunt (519) 824-4120, Ext. 53338

SPORTS MEDIA GROUP PUBLISHES ULTIMATE BIO ON SAM SNEAD
"These greens are so fast I have to hold my putter over the ball and
hit it with the shadow." Sam Snead Even today, 68 years after bursting onto the national scene, Sam Snead remains the standard. He was the winner of seven major championships, a seven-time member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, and an original member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Until today, though, few people could truly say that they knew Sam. Al
Barkow, veteran golf reporter and recipient of the 2005 PGA Lifetime
Achievement Award in Journalism, has written the definitive biography of
one of the greatest golfers of all time.
Sam: The One and Only Sam Snead is not only a peek behind the mask, but
an arresting look into the life of one of the game's most engaging yet
enigmatic figures.
"...it's a story of Sam he would never tell himself, but one that needs
to be told. It will enrich the memory of him for those who knew him and
saw him play and give him a presence he deserves." -- Jack Burke Jr.
Taken and edited from a release from Ann Arbor Media Group http://annarbormediagroup.com
*Editor's Note: I read the book this week and I think Jack Burke Jr.
nailed it in his review. Congrats to Skip DeWall and his Ann Arbor Media
Group for this nice read.

TOMASULO AND HARRIS CONTINUE THEIR STRONG GOLF AT ALBERTA CLASSIC
When we were focusing on the last round duel of Anders Hultman and Mike
Harris at last week's Bay Mills Open, Peter Tomasulo was also shooting
an eye opening 5 under 67. Peter continued his strong play and won at
Alberta last week. Here are some remarks from Marty Henwood to flesh
this out.
"So long, Peter Tomasulo. It¹s been great knowing you.
For the second consecutive year, a player has captured the Nationwide
Tour¹s Alberta Classic playing on a Canadian Tour sponsor¹s exemption to
earn his way onto the PGA Tour¹s premier feeder circuit.
One year after Canadian David Hearn won in Calgary, Tomasulo, who won
the Canadian Tour¹s Montreal Open presented by Lexus less than a month
ago, closed out with a 2-under 69 Sunday. Tomasulo¹ four-day total of
9-under 275 was two shots in front of Aaron Barber, the 2001 Canadian
Tour money winner.
"It was fun and tough all at the same time," said Tomasulo, a
23-year-old native of Long Beach, Calif. "It was stressful out there. The course
was playing so tough."
Alan McLean, Jason Schultz and Michael Harris, coming off a win last
week at the Bay Mills Open Players Championship, also placed in the top
ten."

ROUNDS DOWN SLIGHTLY IN JULY-NGF REPORT
Same-store rounds played in the U.S. decreased slightly (-0.3%) in July
2005 vs. July 2004, based on data from operators at 1,819 golf
facilities. That leaves the year-to-date number 0.9% behind the 2004 pace. Best
performing regions in July were the South Central (up 4.1%) and
Northeast (up 3.4%). The worst performing region was the Upper Midwest (down
3.6%).
The best performing region year-to-date through July was the Gulf Coast
(up 3.9%) but that is sure to change given the destructive path of
Hurricane Katrina. The worst performing region year-to-date was the
Southwest (down 5.8%), which had monsoon-like rains earlier in the year.
