MGN ON THE ROAD
Lansing-
There is a variety of fine golf courses in our state's capital and if you have not been there, you should visit. We start with the latest and greatest, Eagle Eye Golf Club at Hawk Hollow http://hawkhollow.com . We visited the complex last year, when the course hosted the Michigan League Championship Series http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/mgcoaleaguetournament/ We also were there when course architects Paul Albanese and Chris Lutzke presided at a media day function for the course. They brought some extra firepower along by having the famed Pete Dye on hand as part of their group. Lutzke was the latest architect that Mr. Dye has sent out into the world with his stamp of approval. Other Dye students have included Jack Nicklaus, Tom Doak and Tom Liddy.

Albanese and Lutzke are concluding their work on the "Sweetgrasses" course at theChip-In's Island Resort and Casino in Harris. The course is scheduled for a soft opening in late spring or early summer of 2007. It will be interesting to see what these two talented architect's will produce as a team. Albanese, who worked for Jerry Matthews and Natural Course Design carved out a few bunkers at the Christiana CC in Indiana, with a team of Belgium horses. Ever wonder how the architects moved dirt before tractors and dozers? Check out this show and find out http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/christiana/

Timber Ridge GC, is a fine Jerry Matthews design and for a course preview you can go to http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/golfcoursepreviews/timberridge/ Little Hawk at Hawk Hollow, of Hawk Hollow fame, is one of two Jerry Matthews designed 18 hole putting courses. The other is at Buck's Run in Mt. Pleasant. These are challenging putting courses that can provide for a good time.

Obviously, the Forest Akers courses are an option to play, but stay away from football weekends. You can enjoy some fall golf on these two courses that have had the hands and minds of Bruce Matthews, Bruce Matthews III and Arthur Hills on them.

There are other fine courses available all residing on http://www.lansing.org

Saugatuck
We had the opportunity to meet, Felicia Fairchild, the Director of theSaugatuck/Douglas Convention & Visitors Bureau during our visit. While she is more in tune with the arts scene i Saugatuck, she was aware ofClearbrook Golf Club,Ravines Golf Club andWest Shore Golf Club. Clearbrook has recently had some renovation to the course while, The Ravines is continuing to mature and honor the vision of Arnold Palmers Golf Design Company. The West Shore is a delightful 18-hole golf course of natural beauty. It is nne of the 10 oldest golf courses in the state. The course opened in 1916, and it was expanded to 18 holes in 1932.

If you have never visited Saugatuck, do yourself a favor and go there. It is a great arts community located in one of Michigan's great harbor towns. http://www.saugatuck.com

WHY GOLFERS PLAY YOUR COURSE-NEW REPORT FROM NGF

We have mentioned ³wallet share² previously in the pages of Inside the Ropes and Golf Industry Report. In this issue, we¹re going to take a look at what motivates public golfers to play at the course they play most often (high wallet share) vs. a course they play only occasionally (low wallet share).

To illustrate wallet share: A golfer plays 50 rounds per year. He plays 20 of those rounds at one course, so that course gets a 40% wallet share from the golfer. He plays 5 rounds at another course, which gets a 10% wallet share, and so on. The average wallet share from all of a golf course¹s customers equals its overall wallet share. One of the best ways to increase rounds of golf at a golf course is to increase wallet share among existing low wallet share customers.

Conclusions
High wallet share customers are more likely to live close by and choose your course because you are convenient. But perceived value is important to them too. And especially important to you if you have competition close by that is equally convenient for these customers. In that case you have to deliver a better value proposition if you expect to win the wallet share and market share battle with your competitors. Your high wallet share customers are also likely to be acquainted with each other not surprising given that they are likely to see each other regularly at the course. That makes word-of-mouth very important. Low wallet share customers are quite different. They often come because they were invited by one of your high wallet share customers. But they also come on their own, just because they enjoy playing your course every once and a while. To get more rounds out of these golfers you¹ll need to help them get invited more often (maybe some special outings/tournaments?). But you will also need to remind them that you are there. Remember, you¹re not conveniently located which means ³out of sight, out of mind.² While possibly difficult or expensive to communicate with, it¹s worth it because chances are there are lots and lots of golfers living on the fringes of your trade area. The increased cost of communications with low wallet share customers makes it perfectly clear why you must collect contact information on every golfer that comes through your door.

The bottom line:
€ Location, location, location Š as in real estate you can¹t beat having a course in a great location with lots of golf demand in close proximity.
€ Golfers are highly motivated by convenience when choosing where to play, not to mention that golf usually takes up enough time on its own, without adding excessive drive times. But perceived value is right up there too
€ To increase wallet share among golfers on the fringes of your trade area you must provide motivations for them to drive past their regular haunts. Has anyone given discounts based on how far a golfer has traveled to visit a course?
€ Figure out ways to get your existing high wallet share customers to more frequently invite their golf friends who live further away to play at your course.
€ Golfers have lots of choices. In a study we conducted last year among a nationally representative sample of golfers, we found that golfers, on average, have 13 accessible golf facilities within reasonable driving distance. Most only play 4 of those available facilities in any given year. You need to remind golfers you are there, and increase wallet share among low wallet share customers.

There are three things every operator needs to know for success wallet share, customer origin and their loyalty index. We¹ll have more to say about all three in future newsletters. You can measure these things yourself or have NGF do it for you and also show you how your results measure up to national benchmarks through our Golfer Survey Program. For more information, call Ben Fowler, NGF¹s golf facility research & consulting sales manager, at (561) 354-1628 or e-mail bfowler@ngf.org.

PONTIAC MUNICIPAL UP FOR SALE
In another sign of the tough economic times, the Pontiac Municipal Golf Course is up for sale or lease from the heavily debt ridden city. This follows quickly on the same plight that faces Rackham GC of Detroit. It seems that cities just like corporations, need to trim some of their money losing responsibilities as they try to right their budgets.
