PARDON THE INTERRUPTION

GLSP currently has five of its web sites down:
http://michiganrunner.tv
http://michigangolfer.tv
http://michiganskier.tv
http://michiganrunner.com

Hopefully, the above sites will be up later today. We have been with
our ISP (Internet Service Provider) for a decade, plus, and we have
always had excellent service. The sites went down because some new
servers failed. There has been a substantial rebuilding of the system
since this meltdown. With thousands of people a day using these sites,
it has been an inconvenience for all, and we apologize for it.

Again, we have moved 130 or about 10% of our over 1300 shows, to the
You Tube platform. During the interruption, clients can go to
http://youtube.com type in the name of their show and it should
appear.

LYNN JANSON FIRED AT EGYPT VALLEY
==================================
Lynn Janson, Michigan Hall of Fame member, a golf professional for 32
years and one of Michigan's most revered golfers, didn't make the cut
after a series of personnel moves that the Egypt Valley board made. A
festering investigation concerning a laid off worker and the Egypt
Valley GM Steve Pastoor, broke wide open and has Western Michigan all
a-twitter. Greg Johnson's story is front page on the Grand Rapids
Press http://www.mlive.com/sports/grpress/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1191499502213450.xml&coll=6and
the story is also one of the leads on
MSNBChttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21117998/

This is one complicated story and interested people need to read about
it to form their own opinion.

BOYNE IS NOW A COAST TO COAST PROVIDER OF SKIING AND GOLF
By Jack Berry
===========================================================
Boyne, the Big Daddy of Michigan resorts, is giving new meaning to the
company name of Boyne USA with the acquisition of three New England
resorts and an additional resort near its Crystal Mountain property in
Seattle.

Boyne now stretches from coast-to-coast plus British Columbia and
Steve Kircher, head of Eastern operations and the son of Boyne founder
Everett Kircher, said "This is not the end."

The Kirchers are the largest family owners and operators of ski
resorts in North America with 10 locations, Michigan, Montana, Maine,
New Hampshire, Utah, Washington and British Columbia. The recent
expansion is the result of a partnership with CNL Income Properties, a
real estate investment trust (REIT) headquartered in Orlando.

"It's a continuation of what we've been doing for 60 years, "Kircher
said. "Dad started the geographical footprint 60 years ago with the
(sightseeing) lift at Gatlinburg (Tenn.). Our goal is becoming the
best four seasonresort company in the world by 2015.

"The relationship with CNL opened new doors for us. It's the first
time skiing had REIT capital to back it. It came about through our
relationship with Marriott at the Inn at Bay Harbor. In the early
1990s, Marriott had 400 properties and now it's grown to 2,800 and
gone from ownership and managing to just managing."

Kircher said his father, who died in 2002, "would think this is
unbelieveable. He said there was no way you could make money or get
money in the ski business and you had to be long term patient.

Kircher said with the addition ofSugarloaf/USA and Sunday River in
Maine and Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, he expects skier visits at
Boyne properties to jump to 3.6 million this winter from 1.9 last
winter.

"We've come up with $125 million of acquisitions in the last month.
The partnership has allowed us to buy things we never would have been
able to do on our own," Kircher said. "We're evolving the way Marriott
and Starwood have. REIT owns and we manage."

While Boyne remains Big Daddy in Michigan with Boyne Mountain, Boyne
Highlands, the Inn at Bay Harbor, eight golf courses and Avalanche Bay
indoor water park, Kircher said "I can't talk REIT into investing in
the state ofMichigan right now. I said that when I testified in
Lansing (in support of an increased tourism budget)."

Kircher said the $30 million appropriation, which funded the "Pure
Michigan" television, radio and billboard campaign in the Midwest, was
a good start –"We're seeing more license plates from outside of
Michigan" – but it's going to take years of pounding hard. The more
people who come in and get around the state will realize what a great
state this is to live and work in. We had a customer in from Texas and
he was surprised at what Michigan is," Kircher said.

Atwood-Antrim Dells GC
Mike Morrical and family have brought back to life this early Jerry
Matthews (circa 1971) gem. The changes include adding a new deck that
allows you to see Lake Michigan, a new irrigation system has provided
the water to grow lush fairways and finally, the addition of many
flower beds to create a visual feast for golfers. Matthews has always
liked Antrim Dells. He did the first nine in 71 and the second nine
two years later. He was visibly pleased at the condition of one of his
first efforts.

Kalamazoo-Ridgeview Golf Club
This is where it all began for the Osprey S.A. Ltd. when the sons and
daughter of Kalamazoo CC professional Walter Biber plunked down
$12,000 as a down payment to buy Ridgeview.

In an interview with Mike Biber for our Spring issue of MG, Jack Berry
said noted that, "Golf is in Biber's blood. His father, Walter, was
pro in Lansing, Sault Ste. Marie, Jackson and finally at Kalamazoo
Country Club. Biber said his father, Ron LaParl of Battle Creek
Country Club and the late Reggie Myles Jr. of the Country Club of
Lansing were compatriots.

"I started working in the pro shop In Kalamazoo when I was five or
six. My dad had me painting the bag room. He emphasized junior golf
and started caddy scholarships. He was an innovator. He was the first
to have carts and then he almost got fired for putting women's
clothing in the golf shop."

In later years when Ridgeview became available, Biber and his brother
and sister bought it. It is described as "an excellent choice for
senior players, families and kids wanting to play the game at a
relaxed pace."

Visitors need to check out Wally's Wall at the club. You will see
photos of Walter Biber with Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan during an
exhibition at Kalamazoo CC. Biber had a great career at Kalamazoo, he
was a real innovator. He also still holds the course record at
Ridgeview at 64.

Kewadin-A-Ga-Ming-Sundance
A-Ga-Ming combines the history of the Torch course, with its original
nine designed by Roy Wetmore in 1973 and then the second nine,
designed by former PGA Champion, Chick Harbert, to the new Sundance
course, designed by Jerry Matthews. In re-visiting the course,
Matthews again praised the great shaping work done by Steve St. James,
who is now the Superintendent of The Torch.

Manistee-Manistee National
We had a nice visit with GM Doug Bell and Joel Swanson, course
superintendent at Manistee National. Much of the talk centered around
the Cutter's Ridge course, but then shifted to the night in October of
last year, when a vicious storm hit and took out over a thousand trees
at the resort. The 14th and 15th holes at Cutter Ridge were hit, but
most of the damage was done on the Canthooke Valley course. Swanson
said, he got a call at one o'clock in the morning telling him that
some trees were down in the parking lot, an hour later, he got a call
telling him that some trees were down on the course and finally he got
a call at about 4:00 A.M. that pointed out the gravity of the
situation by describing it in one word, devastation.

All that is history now, as the 36-hole layout at Manistee National is
in terrific shape, thanks to the work of Joel Swanson and his crew.

St. John's-The Emerald at Maple Creek
Our visit to The Emerald at Maple Creek brought back a ton of memories
for Jerry Matthews. He pointed out that he was brought in to add
another nine to the then Clinton County nine hole course that was
there. While driving the course, he chatted about the various changes
that were made to the original nine as they married the old and new
courses. One hole they did not touch was the former 9th or finishing
hole on the course, that is now the 17th hole. The current 17th hole
was one designed by his father, W. Bruce Matthews in the late 50's as
part of some work to the course that came about because the highway,
27, was being widened.

==============-
STORM STORIES
==============-
While chatting about the devastating storm that hit the Canthooke
Valley course in 2006, we began to think about other such storms that
have occurred and caused carnage on golf courses. The ones we have
heard about or seen are:

Arcadia Bluffs- The repercussions of the "100 year storm" were
substantial. Many of the trees on the site had been taken out during
construction of this links themed course and the storm drains built
for the course were inexplictedly covered over during construction, to
prevent silt from filling them in. The combination, created a sand and
water tsunami that ended up as a new peninsula in Lake Michigan. It was
strange to see giant earth movers heading out on peninsula to reclaim
the sand for the course.

Calderone Farms-A late September storm created such havoc at the site
of Calderone Farms, that they were not able to have a scheduled spring
opening. The financial set back from the lost of anticipated revenue,
set the stage for the financial difficulties and then the eventual
sale of the property.
http://calderonefarmsgolfclub.com

Point O'Woods-The storms that come in from Lake Michigan can be
awesome. Storms can pick up additional energy crossing the Lake and
begin their destruction at landfall. There is a reason that Woods is
part of Point O'Wood name, but there was lesser reason after this
storm felled century old trees.

Tanglewood Marsh-The first time we visited this course, the architect
pointed out one of the doglegs he had created by leaving a line of
trees between two fairways. When we came back for another look two
months later, the dogleg was gone, taken our by another "100 year
storm". While it was not funny looking out at a dogleg that you could
cut a 100 yards off because of the reason for the dogleg was gone, it
was strange.

Timber Ridge-Timber Ridge was laid low by a storm just prior to its
grand opening. The crew worked around the clock to get trees off the
fairways, but you could easily see the storm's path during the
opening.

Treetops-The Gaylord area has had its share to violent storms. The one
the roared through Treetops shortly after it opened, caused
substantial damage to it brand new fairways. Set to open in nearby
Vanderbilt, was a new wild life park, that never did open because of
the damage of the storm and the financial disaster that happened
because of it.

Washtenaw Country Club-This hundred year old golf course was hit hard
by storm in the early 80's, that hit the course and little else. I
know, because the course is just down the road from my house, and I
ended up getting a ton of fire wood out of it.

Those are our storm stories. If any of our readers have some other
storm stories to share, let us know.

TRAVELS WITH JERRY
=====================
Most of the time, many of us do not know when we have done the last of
something we have always enjoyed. We always think there will be other
opportunities to do it again somewhere down the road. However, years
and times move on and suddenly we realize that we can no longer run
the marathon, throw a hard high one pass a waiting batter, hit a
career golf shot or in the case of Jerry Matthews design another golf
course. It is not that his considerable skills have diminished, it is
just the economic reality of today's marketplace. In the past five
years, more Matthews courses have closed than opened. The 36-hole
Wolverine, the nine hole Mitchell Creek, the Hawk at Partridge Creek
and English Hills are all former Matthews courses that are now gone.

Certainly Matthews has no complaints, as he has designed over a
hundred golf courses. He is a person that ranks in the top 10 of
America's most prolific golf architects. The list includes the likes
of Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus,
Arnold Palmer and Jerry Matthews. In Michigan, he has no peer, there
is no one close to him.

However, at the age of 73, Matthews would like to design one more and
hopes that it will happen. Currently, his curtain call is A-Ga-Ming's
Sundance Golf Course. Finished two years ago, Sundance is getting rave
reviews from golf writers and more importantly, plenty of play from
Michigan golfers. Prior to that he did Buck's Run, Hawk's Hollow, St.
Ives, Elk Ridge, Timberstone and The Woods course on Mackinaw Island.

While waiting for that phone to ring, Matthews continues his teaching
for his and his father's beloved Michigan State University. To be
sure, he is getting his share of renovation projects, but the real
excitement is in new course design. On the plus side, the slow down
has given him some time to revisit some of his earlier works. This
past week, as part of an online video project featuring Matthews
courses, GLSP visited Cutter's Ridge at Manistee National, The Emerald
at Maple Creek, Sundance at A-Ga-Ming and Antrim Dells.

When he was on property, it seemed like everybody wanted to see him.
At Manistee, GM Doug Bell and Superintendent Joel Swanson were waiting
to chat. At Antrim Dells, Mike Morrical and members of his family
waited until we got there, just to tell him how much they enjoyed the
course he had designed over 30 years ago. When we were at A-Ga-Ming,
owners Larry Lavely and Mike Brown and superintendent Steve St. James,
took time to chat with Matthews.

We arrived very late at The Emerald, just as the new golf
professional,Kurt D. McDowell, was putting away the carts. He gave us
one for a quick glimpse of the course, When we returned, I introduced
him to to Matthews by saying that not only was this the person who
designed the second nine holes on the course, but that his father had
done work on what is now the 17th hole in the late 1950's. McDowell,
indicated that he knew all about Matthews work as he had played his
high school golf on Sugar Springs, a course Matthews designed and
built in 1972.

Our video version of the Jerry Matthews Golf Trail will have eight
courses online next year. Joining Timberstone GC in Iron Mountain, The
Natural in Gaylord, The Majestic at Lake Walden in Hartland and Buck's
Run in Mt. Pleasant will be Cutter's Ridge at Manistee National,
Antrim Dells in Atwood, A-Ga-Ming in Kewadin and The Emerald at Maple
Creek in St. John's.

Hopefully, Jerry Matthews wlll get another shot a golf course, but if
he did, he would most likely want to do another after he completed
that one.

RED FOX RUN TO BE AUCTIONED
=============================
Yet another sign of these troubled times is the auction of Red Fox Run
golf course in Gwinn. MGCOA President and master professional, Frank
Guastella has been the co-owner of this property for more than a
decade and has fought the good battle. I remember him telling me last
year, that he would not be able to take a salary because golf play had
dropped so dramatically.

The auction is to be held by McKay Properties on Monday, October 15 at
the Red Fox Run Golf Club. Details are

Ireland's Adare Manor was the site for Robert Trent Jones final major

Lahinch Golf Links almost has it all. They have the history, built in
1892, designer blood lines in Old Tom Morris and Alister MacKenzie, a
storied hole in No. 5 and a location on the Atlantic Ocean. What they
don't have, according to professional Bob McCavery, is the
infrastructure to support a major tournament. It is not near a major
city, they have narrow roads and there are few hotels. Our video gives
you a nice look at the town, course and a recounting of the history by
Bob McCavery, who has been the pro since 1959 after he took over from
