"FOREVER SCRATCH" By Vartan Kupelian

The Michigan Golf Foundation is now selling a book detailing the life
of Chuck Kocsis, Michigan's greatest amateur golfer. The book costs
$25, which includes shipping, and can be ordered by sending a check to
the Michigan Golf
Foundation, 6801 North Meadows Way, Dexter, Michigan 48130. All
proceeds will go to the Foundation. Special kudos to Vartan Kupelian
for taking on the project, pro bono publico.

For those of you that would like to revisit some of that history via a
video, you can see the interview of Jack Berry and Bill Shelton

Treetops-Pepsi Fall Charity Invitational
This year, nearly 400 golfers participated in the 20th anniversary of
one of Michigan's largest and most competitive tournaments. You can
catch a lot of the action

Villages of Tullymore
Last week, the Grand Opening for the Villages of Tullymore was held.
It is a $15 million home and condo development at the Tullymore Golf
Course site. Mecosa L.L.C purchased the Tullymore and St. Ives
properties from Canadian Lakes Development Co. earlier in the year for
$15 million. The Villages at Tullymore will build out to 340 homes and
condos with a 13,000 square-foot clubhouse and a new 13 acre lake.

GM Kevin O'Brien is obviously excited about the project and shares his
thoughts with us. See him on You Tube

Crystal Mountain Resort's Elite Junior Golf School-Brad Dean and
Jennie McCafferty
This summer we had a chance to visit with Brad Dean and members of his
Crystal Mountain Resort instructional team. Dean and members of his
staff have annually received national and state acclaim. Of late, his
reputation has been enhanced by the establishment of an Elite Golf
School. The young guns of today and the stars of tomorrow have been
congregating at Crystal for the past few years.. This year, some of
those students included Michigan Amateur Champion, MSU's Ryan Brehm
and past Michigan Amateur Champion and now golf professional, EMU's
Korey Mahoney.

-------
Eagle Eye Golf Course-Pete Dye, Chris Lutzke, Paul Albanese and Jack Berry
We had the chance to chat with some great golf architects at the Grand
Opening of Eagle Eye Golf Course. The video footage had been gathering
some dust in our vaults, so we thought it was time to bring it online.
Jack Berry had the delightful task of interviewing the renown Pete
Dye, who mentored Chirs Lutzke for a couple of decades, Chirs Lutzke
who was responsible for designing the course and Paul Albanese,
Lutzke's partner.

Masters Memories Achievement Award
Fourteen members of the media were honored at the newMasters Memories
Achievement Award this spring. The Masters ticket is not only hard to
come by for consumers, it also attracts such heavy interest from
journalists, that media credentials are rare as well. Of course the
demand was not always like that. Our show captures the memories of
golf writers who have been covering the Masters for 40 or more years.
You can find the total list and write ups of them on the Masters site
http://masters.org/en_US/news/articles/2007-04-04/200704041175714008859.html

Our video features, John Derr, who has covered the Masters the
longest, 62 years, Dan Jenkins, Dave Kindred, Hubert Mizell, Nick
Seitz, Art Spander and Al Wester.Cheers.

------
The Retreat at Grand Haven Golf Course-with John Rooney and Jerry Matthews
The folks at the Grand Haven Golf Club are adding some single dwelling
homes to the course. The former driving range and a re-arrangement of
a couple of the holes have allowed for this. This W. Bruce Matthews
designed course is one of Michigan's treasures. Our hots for the video
are John Rooney and Jerry Matthews. Rooney and his family purchased
Grand Haven in the late 90's and have erected a new clubhouse,
upgraded the entire golf course and now are looking to buiding some
homes.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vGPTxFDXBQE

Dan Rooney, son of John, was the inspiration for the "Fallen Heroes
Memorial" that the PGA and many golf associations participated in this
September. They will shift the date to the Memorial Day weekend this
year.

THE LABELLE WATCH
By Terry Moore
===================
The PGA Tour is winding down with only three more official money
events remaining. The drama now is to see what players will receive or
retain their cards by finishing in the top 125 of the money list.
Right now, Michigan native Doug LaBelle II is scrambling to keep that
precious pass. After a sensational start early in the year,
highlighted by a T-4 worth $204K at the Sony event in Hawaii,
LaBelle's season has cooled down and has struggled making enough cuts
(missing three of the past four events.) Currently, he ranks 132nd on
the money list with $585, 198 in earnings. The last three events are
this week in Arizona, the following week in Florida and the season
finale at the Disney courses in Orlando the weekend of Nov. 1-4. One
high finish for Labelle would sew up his card. If not, he'll return to
the grueling Q School crap game. The intense pressure of gaining or
keeping one's Tour card—for Labelle and others—will make for
compelling television viewing in the next month. At least, that's what
I'm telling my wife.

NEW GOLF LINGO TO ADD TO YOUR VOCABULARY
===========================================
Golf has unique, unusual and often colorful terms to describe a golf
shot, including shank, chili-dip, skull, duck-hook, worm-burner, etc.
One of the expressions heard at my Club is – "that was a Linda
Ronstadt (Blue Bayou)

Here are some new ones to add to your vocabulary.

That was:
A *James Joyce* - an impossible read
A*Rock Hudson* - looked straight, but wasn't.
A *Cuban* - needed one more revolution
An *Adolf Hitler* - two shots in the bunker
A *Kate Winslett* - little bit fat but otherwise perfect
A *Princess Grace* - should have taken a driver
A *Princess Di* - shouldn't have taken a driver
A *George W.* - steadily fading
A *Circus tent* - a BIG top
An *Anna Kournikova* - looks great, but unlikely to get a result
A *Rush Limbaugh* - too far to the right
A *Nancy Pelosi* - too far to the left
One of our newsletter contributors, Dave Kaiser, got this from a
friend and passed it on. Thanks Dave

* Editors Note: Some of you know Dave from the various golf related
products he markets at the golf shows. Most others, including all
Spartan fans, remember him for his winning field goal at the Rose
Bowl. Last week, MSU had its50th Anniversary Celebration for its 1957
team ad Kaiser was on hand.

Here are some comments from the MSU website. "The 1957 National
Championship Football Team, Michigan State has won or shared six
national titles in college football. And one of those teams - the 1957
Spartans - has been forgotten in debates about the school's best
squads. Without an undefeated record or a bowl game to frame their
brilliance, Duffy Daugherty's players will have to be content with two
facts: Fans who saw them still smile at the thought of those games.
And foes who felt their power still wish they hadn't. On the 50th
anniversary on Daugherty's fourth team and one of his best, it's time
to salute a group that finished 8-1 and won with style. Longtime
Michigan State beat writer and columnist Jack Ebling leads a trip down
Memory Lane"http://msuspartans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/msu-m-footbl-body.html

You will also find on that page an audio of Dave Kaiser discussing his
famous kick. Cheers and Go Spartans.

NATIONAL CITY BAILS OUT FIRST TEE
================================
A story by Carlos Monarrez in last Friday's Freep, indicated that the
First Tee of Detroit received 300K from National City. First Tee was
facing a debt of 100K for the year and was considering shutting down
in December. The National City money is the front end of a 3 million
dollar fund raising campaign.

A Tip of the Tam to National City for stepping up to the tee. National
City just happens to be our bank and certainly reason enough to stay
put. Cheers.

SOME MORE NON-GOLF NEWS
By Terry Moore
===========================
As readers of this e-newsletter are aware, I occasionally chime in
with some news and perspective on the domestic auto industry. I do it
because, in my humble opinion, the Big Three's financial well-being is
so crucial to restoring our state's economic and business climate. And
accordingly, all of that has a tremendous impact on the Michigan golf
economy. So I read with interest Consumer Reports' annual quality
survey, released this past week, which reported that Ford Motor Co.
has achieved significant gains in the influential study that is
watched closely by car buyers. The study indicated 93% of Ford,
Lincoln and Mercury models scored average or better in the annual
reliability survey and that the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan are
among the most reliable family vehicles on the road today. A Ford
quality manager reported the automaker has seen "a 50 percent
reduction in warranty issues over the last three years." Last Friday,
the Detroit News reported that a Ford-commissioned quality survey
found its products in a statistical dead heat with vaunted Toyota.
However, Toyota still had a number of vehicles high on the quality
survey which involved 50 tests from braking, handling, noise and
ergonomics. In eight car categories, Toyota had five vehicles listed
as "most reliable." But for the first time since 1996 a Toyota Camry
did not earn a "recommended" rating by Consumer Reports, largely due
to transmission problems for the vehicle.

All in all, although GM and Chrysler still lagged in this important
quality survey, this was very good news indeed for Ford, one of the
state's key industries and employer and hence the Michigan golf
economy.

Adare Golf Club with Cathal O'Sulivan
Ireland's Adare Manor was the site for Robert Trent Jones final major
golf course design. It is now the home of the Irish Open and was
recently extended to its 7453 yards. The Maigue River and a 14 acre
lake provide the usual water hazards that Robert Trent Jones so loved
to create.

Lahinch Golf Club with Jennie McCafferty and Bob McCavery
Lahinch Golf Links almost has it all. They have the history, built in
1892, designer blood lines in Old Tom Morris and Alister MacKenzie, a
storied hole in No. 5 and a location on the Atlantic Ocean. What they
don't have, according to professional Bob McCavery, is the
infrastructure to support a major tournament. It is not near a major
city, they have narrow roads and there are few hotels. Our video gives
you a nice look at the town, course and a recounting of the history by
Bob McCavery, who has been the pro since 1959 after he took over from
his dad, who was there for a couple of decades himself. Enjoy
