French Lick has been around for a century plus as a resort and at one time represented gaming in America like Las Vegas does now. High powered personalities of the 30' and 40's visited the area for gaming and golf. Such guests included, Bing Crosby, Joe Louis, George Jessel, Lana Turner, Howard Hughes, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Barrymore. However, once owner Tom Taggart lost the battle to keep the illegal gaming ongoing, the gaming in French Lick ceased. Tough times hit the valley, with only the success of Larry Bird, the Hick from French Lick, keeping it in the spotlight. With the influx of the gaming money all of that has changed. Dave Harner, Director of Golf for French Lick, gives us a tour of the golf properties, telling us about Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross and now, the new Pete Dye golf course. Video Channels Michigan Golfer Televisionhttp://michigangolfer.tv/ You Tube http://youtube.com/watch?v=mLllvTB-gAI Stanwood-Villages of Tullymore Recently, the Grand Opening for the Villages of Tullymore was held in Stanwood. The Villages of Tullymore is a $15 million home and condo development at the Tullymore Golf Course site. Mecosa L.L.C purchased the Tullymore and St. Ives properties from Canadian Lakes Development Co. earlier in the year for $15 million. The Villages at Tullymore will build out to 340 homes and condos with a 13,000 square-foot clubhouse and a new 13 acre lake. GM Kevin O'Brien is obviously excited about the project and shares his thoughts with us. Video Channels Michigan Golfer Television http://michigangolfer.tv You Tube http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wd7ZK2huPuY ============================= MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD ============================= Blacksburg, Virginia Pete Dye'sVirginia Tech River Course has its roots in a course originally designed by Daniel J. Schlegal of Ault and Clark Associates. However, little is left of that course, as Dye moved400,000 cubic yards of earth and constructing 18 new greens. After two years of extensive work, The River reopened on August 21st 2005. The course is unique in that it has 70' rock cliff that juts out close to the New River, and thus pinches the land between the two nines. This unusual land formation provided the opportunity to build two distinct but complimentary nine-hole loops which start and finish adjacent to the club area. The linear layout is similar to that of his Whistling Straits courses in Wisconsin that has 16 holes along the lake. In the River Course, 14 of the 18 holes have views to the river. We dropped by the course in the early morning, when the fog was rising off the river and the heavy dew was glistening on fairways and greens. You can see what we saw by clicking on to our You Tube show at. http://youtube.com/watch?v=_nQnprNkqXA =================================================== NEW MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION SHOWS ON YOU TUBE =================================================== *Viewing reminder- We have gone to more robust video presentations on You Tube and the need to downsize the screen is less important. However, you will still need to downsize the You Tube screen on some of our earlier renderings for better viewing. ----------- 2006 Ryder Cup-The Opening Ceremony and the Introductions of the European Team Bill Shelton returns to host a series of Ryder Cup shows that feature the happening in and around the K Club in Ireland. Susan and Paul Bairley contribute to the fun with their observations and videography. In this show, the European team is introduced and a portion of the opening ceremonies is shown. http://youtube.com/watch?v=KSf4ZR-VdLk ---------- The Retreat at Grand Haven Golf Course-with John Rooney and Jerry Matthews The folks at the Grand Haven Golf Club are adding some single dwelling homes to the course. The former driving range and a re-arrangement of a couple of the holes have allowed for the land. This W. Bruce Matthews designed course, with occasional tweaking by son, Jerry, is one of Michigan's treasures. Our hosts for the video are John Rooney and Jerry Matthews. Rooney and his family purchased Grand Haven in the late 90's and have erected a new clubhouse, put in a new irrigation system, upgraded the entire golf course and now are turning their attention to this new project. You can catch all of the excitement at http://youtube.com/watch?v=vGPTxFDXBQE Also, Dan Rooney, son of John, was the inspiration for the "Fallen Heroes Memorial" that the PGA and many golf associations participated in this September. The event raised more than a million dollars for scholarships. They will shift the date to the Memorial Day weekend this year. http://www.fallenheroesmemorial.com --------- Crystal Mountain Resort's Elite Junior Golf School-Brad Dean and Jennie McCafferty This summer we had a chance to visit with Brad Dean and members of his Crystal Mountain Resort instructional team. Dean and members of his staff have annually received national and state acclaim in lists of top instructors. Of late, his reputation has been enhanced by the establishment of an Elite Golf School. The young guns of today and the stars of tomorrow have been congregating at Crystal for the past few years.. This year, some of those students included Michigan Amateur Champion, MSU's Ryan Brehm and past Michigan Amateur Champion and now golf professional, EMU's Korey Mahoney. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cCdQ6WsjfOs ------- Eagle Eye Golf Course-Pete Dye, Chris Lutzke, Paul Albanese and Jack Berry We had the chance to chat with some great golf architects at the Grand Opening of Eagle Eye Golf Course. The video footage had been gathering some dust in our vaults, so we thought it was time to bring it online. Jack Berry had the delightful task of interviewing the renown Pete Dye, who mentored course architect Chirs Lutzke for a couple of decades. Chirs Lutzke has partnered up with Paul Albanese and the two of them are busy on a number of projects, one being the Sweetgrasses course near Escanaba. Chris Lutzke is still working some with Pete Dye and is on site at the new Dye course in French Lick. http://youtube.com/watch?v=xP8GwAh6SIM ------ Masters Memories Achievement Award Fourteen members of the media were honored at a 2007 Masters Memories Achievement Award ceremony. The Masters ticket is not only hard to come by for consumers, it also attracts such heavy interest from journalists, that media credentials are rare and tough to get as well. Our show captures the memories of golf writers who have been covering the Masters for 40 or more years. You can find the total list and write ups of the honorees on the Masters site at http://masters.org/en_US/news/articles/2007-04-04/200704041175714008859.html Our video features, John Derr, who has covered the Masters the longest, 62 years, Dan Jenkins, Dave Kindred, Hubert Mizell, Nick Seitz, Art Spander and Al Wester. The Masters chair, William Payne, provides input from the Masters organization. Cheers. http://youtube.com/watch?v=B8hdg0iEVHA ================================ THE LABELLE WATCH-PART II By Terry Moore ================================ With only two official money events remaining on the PGA Tour, Mt. Pleasant's Doug Labelle II will need a good finish this and/or next week to retain his card. Unfortunately, by missing the cut last week in Las Vegas at the Fry's Open, Labelle fell back one spot to the 132nd on the money list. The top 125 on the money list retain their cards and avoid returning to Q School. This week's Tour event is the Ginn sur Mer Classic at Tesoro Club in Port St. Lucie, Fl. For the final week, the Tour is at Orlando's Disney courses for the Children's Miracle Network Classic. Here's hoping Labelle doesn't need a miracle finish to keep his card. ========================================================== YOU TUBE, GOOGLE, IPHONE AND GLSP, NOW THAT'S A FOURSOME ========================================================== These are amazing times. As most of you know, GLSP, has been putting content up on the web since 1996. We have been rewarded for both our innovation and the volume of content we have put up in the past 11 years, by millions of readers and viewers pulling up our various pages each year. A few weeks ago, we completely lost three of our sites, the Michigan Runner Television channel, our Running Canada channel and our Michigan Runner Magazine site, when our ISP had three servers crash. Our back up with our ISP was non-existent, which was an abrupt and painful surprise to us. However, we still had our own files and began the long arduous process of putting up 12 years of archives. Our immediate task was to make sure our client's videos were up before we tackled other shows. During the rebuilding of various sites, we got a call from a client wanting to know where his content was. We were dreading such calls, and knew that would come. We explained the situation and indicated that their content would be up within the week. Obviously, our situation was a difficult one and would be that way for the immediate future . Not five minutes later, I was checking out our online content with my new iPhone and lo and behold, I pulled up the very show our client had wondered about. We had put up over 150 of our videos on You Tube in the past five months and our Google search on the iPhone just happened to pull up the show in question. Frankly, I had forgot I had put that show up. It was tad scary, when that show just happened to ge the one that Google pulled up, but this newest delivery mechanism for content offered us a bright and shinning light in what had been a dark day. I should also add that we pulled up the show as we were driving near Ann Arbor, having picked up a wireless connection on the road. Is this a great country or what? ================================================== MGCOA OFFERS "GOLDEN EYEDEA" CONFERENCE THEME ================================================== The MGCOA has sent out its literature concerning their annual conference. Headliners include, David Pearce Synder, Vicki Bernstein, Trey Rogers, Jeff Spencer, Robert Hood and regulars, Tim Skubick, John Dodge and Eric Rule. Be there or be square. http://mgcoa.org ======================== 50 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH By Terry Moore ======================== Reading my Dad'sAir Force Magazine recently, I came upon a nostalgic nugget tucked inside an article and photo story about Sputnik, the orbiting beach-ball sized satellite launched by the USSR on Oct. 4, 1957—50 years ago this month. Many historians say Sputnik not only commenced the Space Age but also punched a hole into the USA's vaunted technological superiority complex. A lot of finger pointing, in typical Washingtonian fashion, ensued wondering how did the Eisenhower Administration allow the USSR to get ahead of the USA in this regard. In the hubbub, Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams, a Democrat, took to satirical pen and released a poem that lampooned President Eisenhower as a golf-playing slacker: Oh Little Sputnik, flying high With made-in-Moscow beep You tell the world it's a Commie sky And Uncle Sam's asleep. You say on fairway and on rough The Kremlin knows it all, We hope our golfer knows enough To get us on the ball. ========================== COLLEGIATE GOLF ROUNDUP ========================== We got a note from Bruce Cunningham, coach of EMU's men's golf team, informing us that the Eagles concluded its 07' fallseason at the Mizuno Georgia SouthernIntercollegiate by finishing5th out of 15 teams.(-2)862 total. The final round included counting rounds of (66,68,70,71) They finished 45-20-2 on the year and are currentlyranked #63, on the National Golfstat rankingsystem and 72nd on Golfweek. The Eagles return to action the firstof March at the South Florida Invitational. We checked theGolfweek Rankings and found information on other successful Michigan teams. Men's Collegiate Teams 14 Michigan State 50 Michigan 72 Eastern Michigan 111 Detroit Women's Collegiate Teams 22 Michigan State 65 Eastern Michigan 69 Michigan 112 Western Michigan http://www.golfweekrankings.com/template ============================================================ DATE CHANGE ON ANDREW WOODS GARLAND SEMINAR AT GARLAND ============================================================ Don White, Drector of Golf at Garland, indicates that the dates of the Marketing Seminar have been moved back a week to the 10th and 11th of Novemberfor the Andrew Wood Seminar. Then it hit me. Police were called to a day care where a three-year-old was resisting a, rest. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all, right now. The roundest knight at King Arthur's round table was Sir Cumference. The butcher backed up into the meat grinder and got a little behind in, his work. To write with a broken pencil is pointless. When fish are in schools they sometimes take debate. The short fortune teller who escaped from prison was a small medium at, large. A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months. A thief fell and broke his leg in wet cement. He became a hardened, criminal. Thieves who steal corn from a garden could be charged with stalking. We'll never run out of math teachers because they always multiply. When the smog lifts in Los Angeles, U.C.L.A. The math professor went crazy with the blackboard. He did a number on, it. The professor discovered that her theory of earthquakes was on shaky, ground. The dead batteries were given out free of charge. If you take a laptop computer for a run you could jog your memory. A dentist and a manicurist fought tooth and nail. A bicycle can't stand alone; it is two tired. A will is a dead giveaway. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana. A backward poet writes inverse. In a democracy it's your vote that counts; in feudalism, it's your Count, that votes. A chicken crossing the road: poultry in motion. If you don't pay your exorcist you can get repossessed. With her marriage she got a new name and a dress. Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to our regular contributor of all things light and funny, Jack Minzey. ================================ KUDOS FOR WOODCOX AND DAVIES ================================ Hi Art. I sit on the Board of Directors of the First Tee of Detroit andyes it has been a huge struggle for us to qualify first rate donors inthese economic hard times. However, National City, as you mentioned, stepped up big time and truly saved the day. I would like to mention twoother heroic people as well. Lisa Woodcox, the dauntless director andRay Davies the best networking man I've ever met. Both deserve atremendous amount of credit. And thank you for printing and keepingthose positive words flowing. All the best, Paul Nefouse.President JP Lann Golf/Nefouse Ent. Inc. * So noted. ================================== "FOREVER SCRATCH" By Vartan Kupelian ================================== The Michigan Golf Foundation is now selling a book detailing the life of Chuck Kocsis, Michigan's greatest amateur golfer. The book costs $25, which includes shipping, and can be ordered by sending a check to the Michigan Golf Foundation, 6801 North Meadows Way, Dexter, Michigan 48130. All proceeds will go to the Foundation. Special kudos to Vartan Kupelian for taking on the project pro bono publico. http://michigan-golf-foundation.com For those of you that would like to revisit some of that history via a video, you can see the interview of Chuck Kocsis by Jack Berry and Bill Shelton athttp://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/kocsis/ ====================================================== WHAT ATTRACTS THE MOST AFFLUENT SPORTS TV VIEWERS? ====================================================== Following up the report in the previous newsletter when we looked at the most affluent sports attendees, we answer the question in this issue, of "Which professional and college sports events draws the most affluent TV viewers?" The answer: PGA Golf and MLS Soccer drew the most affluent, each drawing 19.9% of viewers from households with incomes of $100,000 or more. Of course, PGA Golf viewers could brag of an attendance more than three times greater than viewership of MLS Soccer events. Major League Baseball trailed just slightly in drawing viewers with incomes of $100,000 _ with 19.5% of viewers from that income bracket. The NBA and NFL drew almost identical percentages of viewers in households with incomes of $100,000 _ 16.8% and 16.7% respectively.Auto racing was at the other end of the spectrum, drawing only 10.9% of their viewers from the $100,000-plus bracket. For additional information, contact NSGA's Dan Kasen at (847) 296-6742, e-mail: dkasen@nsga.org ================ SNOWBIRD ALERT =============== Art, Thank you for keeping up the great work with the e-newsletter. Below listed are a fistful of golf courses located along the Florida Panhandle that I hope you will consider for inclusion in an upcoming edition as the weather turns colder in the Midwest. Three of the courses – Camp Creek, Origins and Shark's Tooth – are in the same location, are part of the same "resort" and have begun to attract more and more Michigan golfers as the word gets out (alternative to been there done that Orlando and Tampa) http://www.stjoegolf.com. SouthWood is in Tallahassee, about 2.5 hours away, and Victoria Hills is in DeLand north of Orlando. The two are stand alone courses, but SouthWood features five cottages on site for stay and play. And Victoria Hills is just 30 minutes from the hotel mecca of Orlando.
