MG ON THE ROAD
Auburn Hills-Fieldstone Golf Club
What a day! Fall color was everywhere on the great Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest designed course, Fieldstone. Nestled within a zillion on and off ramps located in Auburn Hills, Fieldstone has found a steady and growing clientele. The course has matured wonderfully since it debuted in 1998. Gordon Marmion is the GM for the complex and has given it a steady hand during its opening years most recently the building of its clubhouse.

Bay City-Bay Valley Resort
It is always nice stopping by the Bay Valley Resort. They are one of the long list of fine Michigan resorts serving their clientele. Bay Valley has had its share of owners since it was built in 1973. Tony Barclae, former owner of Kimberley Oaks in St. Charles, bought Bay Valley a few years ago and has improved the property considerably.

Other members on the team are new GM Joe Coyne, Director of Golf, Brian Ballard and Assistant Bill Crosno. Bay Valley had a very good year, considering the economy, and is looking forward to continuing the trend in 2006.

Bay Valley Resort was designed by Desmond Muirhead, sometimes called the Picasso of golf community design. Muirhead consulted with Jack Nicklaus on Bay Valley in 1972, just a year before they collaborated on Muirfield Village In Dublin, Ohio which opened in 1974. . Golf Magazine did a nice article on Muirhead, which you can check out at

Mt. Pleasant-Buck's Run
We returned to Buck's Run this past week and captured some incredible fall color for an upcoming show of the course, facility and architect, Jerry Matthews. The second of two gravel quarry courses that Matthews designed, the first being Hawk Hollow, Buck's Run has 37-acre Fisher Lake as its focal point to feature five of their greens.

Novi-Rock Financial Showplace
We dropped by the new home of the Michigan Golf Show, the Rock Financial Showplace http://rockfinancialshowplace.com/, which is located on Grand River just a couple of miles from the Novi Expo Center. It is indeed a showplace and will offer an exciting new location for the Michigan Golf Show. In addition to a brand new facility, there will be ample parking, a real bugaboo at the old place.

MGCOA League Championship Series
Kate Moore of the MGCOA and Stewart Healey of Handicomp are optimistic that their new League Championship Series is the start of something big for Michigan golf. Handicomp recently developed the software for league handicapping and MGCOA helped put on the tournament to test it out. Other big MGCOA guns on hand for the first time event included Jim Scott of Gull Lake View, Bill Fountain of the Majestic at Lake Walden and Steve Ramsey, current MGCOA President and owner of Chisholm Hills. The LCS, played on Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, seemed to get off to a great start. To check out the action go to

The Greatest Game Ever Played
Michael Patrick Shiels, one of Michigan's greatest golf writers, has an enchanting interview with Director Bill Paxton, who not only discusses his movie, "The Greatest Game Ever Played", but his growing up at Shady Oak CC which Ben Hogan called home. This is a terrific show about a great movie. It is well worth your time.

Shiels has picked up a new gig and a steady paycheck as the new producer of the drive time show on the Michigan Talk Radio Network. As you may recall, Shiels was the producer of the J.P. McCarthy Show on WJR for many years and also wrote the book "J.P.McCarthy: Just Don't Tell 'Em Where I Am" Shiels joins Larry Adderley and their new boss, Tim Hygh in the challenge of building this statewide collection of AM stations into a major radio force in Michigan.

THE RETURN OF JOHN BEBOW
John Bebow, long time contributor to the Michigan Golfer, former editor of MLive.com, Detroit News writer who was embedded with our troops in Iraq and of late, a writer for the Chicago Tribute; has returned to the friendly confines of our state. Bebow has accepted a position with the Detroit Free Press and begins the job on Halloween. In John's note to his friends, he said, " In the final analysis, Chicago is still our favorite city on the planet (and, man, can we show you some great breakfast places) but we'd rather visit than live there. We're eager to see all of you!"

IN THEIR WORDS: MICHELLE WIE
Editor's note: At the Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif., site of last week's LPGA Tour Samsung World Championship, Michelle Wie met with the media. Following are excerpts of her interview session.

PAUL ROVNAK [Moderator]: Michelle, first of all, I would like to know when you made the decision to become a pro, did you make the decision talking to your parents or you just said I want to be a pro now?

MICHELLE WIE: Of course, I mean it took a lot of planning. It took a lot of discussion, talking about, you know, what are the cons and what are the pros of turning pro, and all of a sudden I said, I think I'm ready for it, I really want to do it, and I think I made a pretty good decision.

Q.: Can you tell me who your role model was?

MICHELLE WIE: My role model definitely is Ernie Els. I love looking at him, swinging. He is such a nice person. I talked to him, and he is like, you're ready to turn pro. It made me feel a lot better. I'm really glad.

Q.: Michelle, I think we all probably know the pros of turning pro, but can you articulate what some of the cons were that you were thinking about?

MICHELLE WIE: Well, I think some of the cons are, that I think about is maybe I was too young, would my life be a lot different? But as I turned pro, I mean nothing is changing, I just found that out. I'm still going to go to school. Nothing is going to change. All of the cons turned to pros.

Q.: Well, Asia is crazy about you because you speak Japanese and Korean, you were born in this country, so it's so to speak yours, I would like to know about European tournaments, such as the British Open, both of them, how did you want to participate and want to win both of them?

MICHELLE WIE: Well, the women's British Open was extra fun this year. It was really cool. I never really played in that kind of condition before. The links golf course are super nice, and I would just love to play in both of the British Opens. I think that would be really awesome.

Q.: Michelle, could you tell us what is the most interesting tournament that you have ever played as an amateur?

MICHELLE WIE: I think the most impressive was -- the funniest was the public links I played in this past year, the men's public links. I think it was the greatest. It was so much fun playing Match Play against them. They are such great players. It was a whole new experience for me. It was awesome.

Q.: Michelle when Tiger turned pro he hooked up with Mark O'Meara as sort of a mentor. Is there any one? Have you even thought about doing something like that? If there is, is there any one off the top of your head that you think you can really learn from?

MICHELLE WIE: Well, over the last couple -- over the last two years, and this year and going forward, I've been -- I really look up to Ernie Els. And I want to play with him. He's awesome. Any advice I get I'm open to.

Q.: Making the huge contract with Sony and Nike does it work as pressure to you, do you feel more pressure to live up to the expectations?

MICHELLE WIE: No, I'm not pressured at all. I just feel really thankful for the opportunity. Hopefully I can live up to that. I don't feel any pressure. I see it as incentive.

BOOK REVIEW: "Golf: Lower Your Score with Mental Training" This is a re-release of a book that originally appeared in 1996 as "The Mind-Body Connection: Lower Your Score with Mental Training". Written by Dr. Tom Saunders, who now teaches at the University of Calgary, the revised edition features a CD that helps the reader, more easily grasp the contents through audio support.

The book has been a success in the past and should continue to do so in the future with this new revised edition.

Saunders picked up an MA in medical education from MSU.
