I tried counting backwards; I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned - The dark meat and white; But I fought the temptation With all of my might. Tossing and turning With anticipation, The thought of a snack Became infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, Flung open the door And gazed at the fridge Full of goodies galore. I gobbled up turkey And buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, Beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling So plump and so round, 'Til all of a sudden I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling, Floating into the sky, With a mouthful of pudding And a handful of pie But, I managed to yell As I soared past the trees... Happy eating to all - pass the cranberries, please. May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump. May your potatoes 'n gravy Have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious, May your pies take the prize, May your Thanksgiving dinner Stay off of your thighs. Thanks and a Tiip of the Tam to Jack Kripl for this Thanksgiving poem. ============================ SWEETGRASS-HOW SWEET IT IS ============================ Sweetgrass is a new golf course that is part of the Island Resort and Casino facility in Harris. The casino has just completed a major building project, that included a new 11 story hotel, a convention center and 1100 seat auditorium. This is an enormous project and dwarfs anything in the area. Interestingly, the four million used to build the golf course as part of this build out, came from a will. Sweetgrass was designed by the architectural company of Albanese and Lutzkehttp://www.golf-designs.com/ . These two designers gained a tremendous amount of experience by working in various roles for Pete Dye, Ray Hearn and Jerry Matthews. Chris Lutzke's first course was Eagle's Eye in Bath. His mentor, Pete Dye dropped by for the grand opening to give support to his studenthttp://youtube.com/watch?v=xP8GwAh6SIM Sweetgrass has primarily been the project of Paul Albanese and his on site shaper, Dan Grassi. We last saw Albanese when he was working a team of horses on a bunker project for Christiana Creek CC in Indianahttp://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/christiana/ Sweetgrass is scheduled for a July 1 opening. The course is about 80% grown in and should be in terrific shape by the grand opening date. We have chosen to bring you our review of the course through our cameras. We were joined in reviewing the course with Tony Mancilla, Tribal attorney, and CEO Scott Herioux. Also, special thanks to Susan Harris, Marketing Director for giving us the run of the place during our stay and Rob Thomas and Dan Shepard of Buffalo Communications for making the initial arrangements. MICHIGAN GOLFER PREVIEW OF SWEETGRASShttp://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/sweetgrass/ You tube versionhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU1AbuEAHZ0 ============================= MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD ============================= Brimley-Wild Bluff GC Things have been a bit quiet at Wild Bluff since the Bay Mills Open ceased operation. Like so many golf tournaments in the past five years, the Bay Mills Open fell prey to a lack of sponsor interest and support. Wild Bluff is a challenging course and ranks in the top five Upper Peninsula courses. Escanaba-Terrace Bluff GC, Gladstone GC, Escanaba CC and The Highlands Escanaba area golf will definitely take a turn for the better with the addition of the new Sweetgrass Golf Course at the Island Resort and Casino. The area gets some lower Michigan traffic, but most golf travelers come from the Wisconsin area. Escanaba is better known for deer hunting, which was pointed out by Jeff Daniels' play Escanaba in da Moonlight. The movie was also filmed there. Gaylord-Treetops and the Otsego Club Otsego Club The "new" Hilltop building is nearing completion. The facility has a variety of ways to accommodate the corporate market. Lodging can be expanded from single rooms to a space which can accommodate an extended family. There will be a meeting room for a small group as well. Connectivity issues concerning communications technologies are still be developed. There is wi-fi aT the resort, but they might need a thicker "pipe" for telecommunications. The new facility is scheduled to open in late December. See our video for further information. Treetops Treetops Resort is closed until December 22 and then will open for the ski crowd. Kevin McKinley, Director of Golf, double up as Director of Skiing during the winter months. McKinley has demonstrated his creative skills by hosting the Amazing Race during the winter and doubling up as host of the Par-3 Amateur Shootout and Pepsi Fall Charity Invitational. See our video for further information. Saulte Ste. Marie Golf and CC This is one of Michigan's oldest courses, having turned 100 years old a few years ago. Jerry Matthews designed the second nine and tweaked the front nine a few years ago. Golfers can golf the course and also watch some of the Great Lakes ore boats drift by at the same time. ================================================================ GOLF RESORTS RETOOL FOR SKI SEASON-OTSEGO CLUB AND TREETOPS ================================================================ Otsego Club Changes for 2007-2008 with Kris Klay Kris Klay, the GM for the Otsego Club has a ton of news for Michigan skiers. For the first time, the Otsego Club will open its slopes to the public on a regular basis. This year, on Wednesday and Thursday the club will be open to the public. There will be some limitations to the number of chairs available, but this is definitely a great new addition to Michigan's ski inventory. In addition, the Hilltop building has had a substantial renovation. The facility has new rooms, meeting space and wi-fi infrastructure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etVfYnoyLQQ Double Feature Treetops: Another of Fun and the 4th Annual Amazing Race with Kevin How's this for a great marketing idea? If you get a 3.75 in one of the Gaylord area schools, you get a free ski pass to Treetops. There is more. If you get a 3.5 or better GPA you get half off the yearly rates. Director of Skiing, Kevin McKinley, discusses the upcoming ski season, with its Fabulous Fifties and Amazing Race. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swUJD1wriI8 ================================================================= MGCOA ANNUAL CONFERENCE-SOARING EAGLE RESORT NOVEMBER 27-29 ================================================================= Michigan's golf business will convene next week to tackle the challenges before them. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two glasses of wine from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things; your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.' The pebbles are the other things that matter like your classroom, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else; the small stuff, curriculum, gradebooks, negotiations, etc.. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.' 'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Go hunting or fishing. Do one more run down the ski slope. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first; the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.' One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine represented. The professor smiled. I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of glasses of wine with a friend.' Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Dave Kaiser for this holiday cheer. ======================================== TOP 10 WINTER ISSUE NOW BEING PREPARED ======================================== Dave Kaiser will get the first sawbuck this year with his Top 10 List of Professional Golfers Aces. French Lick has been around for more than a century, as a health spa, golf resort and gaming center. High powered personalities of the 30's and 40's visited the area for gaming and golf. Resort guests included, Bing Crosby, Joe Louis, George Jessel, Lana Turner, Howard Hughes, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Barrymore. However, once owner Tom Taggart lost the battle to keep the illegal gaming ongoing, the gaming in French Lick ceased. Tough times hit the valley, with only the success of Larry Bird, the Hick from French Lick, keeping the area in the spotlight. With recent legislation, gaming has returned to the valley and along with it lots of jobs. Dave Harner, Director of Golf for French Lick, gives us a tour of the golf properties, telling us about the early work of Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross and, of late, the new Pete Dye course. The Villages of Tullymore is a $15 million home and condo development at the Tullymore Golf Course site. Mecosa L.L.C purchased the Tullymore and St. Ives properties from Canadian Lakes Development Co. earlier in the year for $15 million. The Villages at Tullymore will build out to 340 homes and condos with a 13,000 square-foot clubhouse and a new 13 acre lake.GM Kevin O'Brien is obviously excited about the project and shares his thoughts with us. The former driving range and a re-arrangement of a couple of the holes have allowed for the needed land. This W. Bruce Matthews designed course, with occasional tweaking by son, Jerry, is one of Michigan's treasures. Our hosts for the video are John Rooney and Jerry Matthews. Rooney and his family purchased Grand Haven in the late 90's and have erected a new clubhouse, put in a new irrigation system, upgraded the entire golf course and now are turning their attention to this new project. You can catch all of the excitement at http://youtube.com/watch?v=vGPTxFDXBQE Also, Dan Rooney, son of John, was the inspiration for the "Fallen Heroes Memorial" that the PGA and many golf associations participated in this September. The event raised more than a million dollars for scholarships. They will shift the date to the Memorial Day weekend this year. http://www.fallenheroesmemorial.com ***** Crystal Mountain Resort's Elite Junior Golf School-Brad Dean and Jennie McCafferty This summer we had a chance to visit with Brad Dean and members of his Crystal Mountain Resort instructional team. Dean and members of his staff have annually received national and state acclaim in lists of top instructors. Of late, his reputation has been enhanced by the establishment of an Elite Golf School. The young guns of today and the stars of tomorrow have been congregating at Crystal for the past few years.. This year, some of those students included Michigan Amateur Champion, MSU's Ryan Brehm and past Michigan Amateur Champion and now golf professional, EMU's Korey Mahoney. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cCdQ6WsjfOs ***** Eagle Eye Golf Course-Pete Dye, Chris Lutzke, Paul Albanese and Jack Berry We had the chance to chat with some great golf architects at the Grand Opening of Eagle Eye Golf Course. The video footage had been gathering some dust in our vaults, so we thought it was time to bring it online. Jack Berry had the delightful task of interviewing the renown Pete Dye, who mentored course architect Chirs Lutzke for a couple of decades. Chirs Lutzke has partnered up with Paul Albanese and the two of them are busy on a number of projects, one being the Sweetgrasses course near Escanaba. Chris Lutzke is still working some with Pete Dye and is on site at the new Dye course in French Lick. http://youtube.com/watch?v=xP8GwAh6SIM ***** Masters Memories Achievement Award Fourteen members of the media were honored at a 2007 Masters Memories Achievement Award ceremony. The Masters ticket is not only hard to come by for consumers, it also attracts such heavy interest from journalists, that media credentials are rare and tough to get as well.
