"We recently stumbled on the Michigan Golfer website
http://www.webgolfer.com/history.html and the information you have collected about the history of Michigan golf courses.
The State Historic Preservation Office is always interested in finding
out more about Michigan's history and in bringing it to the attention
of the state's citizens. One way to do that is to nominate resources
that retain their historic integrity to the National Register of Historic
Places. This is an honorary designation that places absolutely no
restrictions on what the property owner does with the property.
An added incentive is that owners of income producing properties can
qualify for federal tax credits on work they do to historic buildings
listed on the National Register if they do the work according to federal
standards. For example, Clubhouses on privately owned courses would
qualify for such a credit. Please visit our website at http://www.michigan.gov/shpo for more information on our programs.
We do have two Michigan golf courses listed on the National Register,
Wawashkamo on Mackinac Island and the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and Golf
Complex, but your list suggests there could be more that are eligible.
You can view short histories of the National Register listed resources
on the Michigan Sites On Line database on our website.
Perhaps we could work together to let your readers know more about the
National Register program. Ideally, it would be wonderful if there
were a person or organization that wanted to sponsor a survey of
Michigan's golf courses to determine which ones retain their integrity and to develop what we call a "historic context" for golf course development in
Michigan. If you are aware of any organizations or foundations that
provide funding to document golf history we would appreciate hearing
about it.
Thank you for documenting this important piece of Michigan's
recreational history.

He thought he should open it to see what it was about. The letter read,
"Dear God, I am an 83-year-old widow, living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension check. Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with. I have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?
Sincerely, Edna."
The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to all the other
workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars. By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman. The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.
Christmas came and went. A few days later, another letter came from the
old lady to God. All the workers gathered around while the letter was
opened, It read:
"Dear God, How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me?
Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for
my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful
gift. By the way, there was $4 missing. I think it must have been those
thieves at the post office.
Sincerely, Edna"
