MGN ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor
James Edwards, Publisher and Skip DeWall, Associate Publisher of Ann Arbor Media Group, are establishing quite a niche in the golf book publishing area. To check out their collection of rare book reprints, click on http://greatgolfbooks.com DeWall has a rich history in the golf book business, first with Sleeping Bear Press, later Clocktower Press and now with AAMG.

Speaking of books, a couple of years ago, we reviewed "Forbidden Fairways", a book by Calvin H. Sinnette. Forbidden Fairways celebrates the efforts of pioneering African American golfers in overcoming great adversity in their struggle to participate. It is particularly appropriate in light of Charlie Sifford being voted into the Golf Hall of Fame. http://seaburn.com/blackbooksplus/forbidden_fairways.htm

Tom Durant, former executive producer of "Golfing the Great Lakes Television Show", a staple on PBS stations for nine years, will be producing another show for Michigan PBS, stations. The working title is "Great Lakes, Great Times", and will focus on Michigan's water wonderland. Durant, also produced the highly acclaimed "Great Lakes Ports O' Call" which ran on PBS stations the past five years. http://www.greatlakesportsocall.com/

Ypsilanti-
As many golf course owners know, a second use of their property golf is to host their community's high school or collegiate cross country meets. Such was the case this past week as Eagle Crest Golf Course hosted the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships. There were some awesome cross country squads on site for the match, with Michigan taking first in both the men's and women's race.

Other uses for golf courses include concert sites, as was demostrated at the TPC with Hootie and the Blowfish and the opening ceremony concert at the Ryder Cup. Also, as winter approaches, some courses use their land as cross country skiing venues.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
Birdies, Eagles and Elk at Thunder Bay Resort http://michigantravel.tv/2004thunderbay/index.html As fall concludes and winter approaches, those looking for an interesting trip, might want to book a weekend at Thunder Bay Resort. They will soon begin their popular Elk Tour sleigh rides. Governor Granholm stopped by Thunder Bay Resort as part of her Michigan Hidden Treasures Tour earlier this year. Our show, shows off the elk and also the legendary Jack Matthais, as he wails on his elk horn.

Tom Bendelow: The Forgotten Architect http://www.michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show26/

Bart Lower, a contestant in the Big Break II television series, brings us the story of Tom Bendelow, once known as the Dean of America's Golf Architects. Bendelow seemed to disappear in one of his bunkers in the mid 30's and very little is now known about him. Bart Lower interviewed Stuart Bendelow, grandson of Tom Bendelow, at Timber Ridge Golf Club.

Stuart Bendelow became interested in his grandfather's career after being contacted by Medinah CC, as they prepared for the 81st PGA Championship in 1999. Bendelow was the designer of Medinah CC, which first opened for play in 1925.

LOWER STILL IN THE HUNT OF THE BIG BREAK II
Dave Gunas Jr., was the 6th player to miss the cut on Big Break II, while Michigan's Bart Lower, won his third skills challenge, which allowed him to observe another fallen comrade. For those of you that are curious about Bart, you can also check out the Tom Bendelow story he did on Michigan Golfer Television http://www.michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show26/

19TH HOLE-ODES TO BEER
Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver." Babe Ruth

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading. Paul Hornung

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not. H.L. Mencken

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Benjamin Franklin

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. Dave Barry

Beer: Helping ugly people have sex since 3000. B.C. W.C. Fields

One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to his buddy, Norm. "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers............

Thanks and a Tip of the Glass to Dr.Jack Minzey for these spirited quotes. Cheers.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
by Lana Ortega, McGetrick Golf Academy, Denver, Colo.

Work smarter (not harder) to improve your golf game In order to improve your scores, you need to know your strengths and weaknesses and where strokes are being wasted during your rounds. This information can help you develop some specific goals for game improvement. To pinpoint trouble spots, take a few minutes after your round to record the following statistics on your scorecard. It won't take long for patterns to develop that will let you know where you need to focus your practice time:
1. Number of fairways hit (zero handicapper hits 11 of 14; 18 handicapper hits 5)
2. Number of greens in regulation (zero handicapper hits 11 of 18; 18 handicapper 3)
3. Total number of putts per round (zero handicapper has 29 putts; 18 handicapper 35)
4. Length of first putt (if you consistently have 30-40 footers for your first putt, you need to work on your accuracy from the fairway, or improve your chipping and pitching)
5. Note directional misses - whether right or left
6. Note extra shots around the green - double chips, flubbed pitches, shots left in the bunker, etc. (zero handicapper gets up and down 77 percent of the time; an 18 handicapper 17 percent)
7. Penalty shots

Sharing this information with your LPGA T&CP member can be extremely helpful, allowing her to develop a practice program that will help you reach your goals. If you and your teacher determine that some mechanical changes need to be made to your golf swing, determine what specifically you need to change and develop an action plan to improve your golf swing. Wanting to hit the ball longer and straighter is a fine long-term goal, but there are probably a few short-term fundamental goals that need to be achieved first - like the proper set-up or backswing position, for example.

The touring professionals take a comprehensive approach when it comes to reaching their scoring potential. They evaluate their total game, determine their strengths and weaknesses and then develop the right course of action - and that is how you should approach playing your best golf too

Ryder Cup Memories-Art McCafferty
One would assume that all of the 10,079,985 people in Michigan have or will be able to enjoy the memories of hosting one the world's greatest events. For many, the playing of seven national anthems at the opening ceremony with the coda of a fly over by the U.S. Air Force, was a real collective throat tightener.
