HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GLSP-FROM THE ARCHIVES
=============================================
We took a look at the hundreds of the golf videos we have put online and selected a few for your holiday viewing. Enjoy

The Heather at Boyne Highlands
Jack Berry and Bernie Friedrich provide the narrative, with owner Everett Kircher and architect Robert Trent Jones offering some of the memories of one of Michigan's most famous courses. We also have the remarkable videography of Joe Yunkman.
http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/boynegolf/heather/

Ben Davis - Michigan Golf Hall of Famer
Butch Rhodes gives us a hand by interviewing his mentor and friend, Ben Davis. Davis a Michigan Hall of Fame member, was the Jackie Robinson of the Detroit golf scene in the 40's and 50's. He broke the color barrier in Detroit golf as a professional golfer and became a legend. Mr. Davis teared up in the interview, when Rhodes asked him to recall the early days for a black golfer in this country.

Irish Celebration at the Henry Ford
What a party. The Irish took over the Henry Ford during the 2004 Ryder Cup week of activities at Oakland Hills. They brought Liam O'Connor, his squeeze box and two Irish dancers and blew everybody away. The Guinness and Jameson was flowing, the music was playing and all of this against the background of the one of the world's greatest museums. Killer stuff.

Robert Trent Jones- The Great One
In the late 80's, I brought a video crew up for the opening of the Treetops course at the then Sylvan Resort. On hand was the great one, Robert Trent Jones, owner Harry Melling, Rick Smith and reporters and interviewers, Terry Moore and Jack Berry. It was a magical time for all of us. Robert Trent Jones was at his Zenith of his power, Harry Melling, a successful industrialist from Jackson, was building his dream resort, Rick Smith, plucked from Ohio, was gearing up for his life as a professional golfer, teacher and golf architect, Terry Moore was the editor of The Michigan Gofler and Jack Berry was continuing a career that has now led him to a Lifetime Journalism Award from the PGA. As for myself, I had invested $600 in a camera crew, without a clue as to how I was going to use the resultant interview with Robert Trent Jones. It took me 18 years to use the video and it became one of our first internet golf shows. Cheers

Chuck Kocsis - The Best There Ever Was
Chuck Kocsis, was simply the best striker of a golf ball that Michigan has produced. He lived a long and wondrous life, that spanned most of last century. We were fortunate to spend some time with him and record some of his stories and accomplishments. Kocsis holds court while Bill Shelton and Jack Berry continue to bring those stories our of his storied life.
http://michigangolfer.tv/2006shows/kocsis/

Dave Hill and the Ryder Cup
The Country Club of Jackson provided the backdrop for our interview with Dave Hill. It was a great afternoon as Jack Berry pulled out some great stories from Hill. While our agenda was to document the memories of his Ryder Cup days, which we did, Hill still gave us some stories about golf in his youth. This is a three part series. Enjoy
http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/davehill/index.html

The Concession-Jacklin and Nicklaus Ryder Cup Legacy
Vanessa Bell was our reporter for a couple of years and she was good and a real head turner as well. I recall a time when we were interviewing Jeff Daniels for his Jeff Daniels Comedy Golf Jam outing. Daniels looked a little put on when we asked him for an interview, but once Vanessa fired up, he melted and came under her spell. Vanessa brought out that same charm when she interviewed Tony Jacklin about the new Concession Golf Course, that he and Jack Nicklaus were building at the time. The Concession, was one of the class acts in Ryder Cup history, unless of course, Dave Hill told you the story.
http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/concession/

The Greatest Game Every Played-Michael Patrick Shiels
Michael Patrick Shiels is a Michigan treasure. A former producer of the J.P. McCarthy show, a noted writer , golf reporter, world traveler and now the host of a drive time radio show in Lansing, Shiels interviewed Bill Paxon for us during a movie tour promoting his, "The Greatest Game Ever Played". This is a great interview, not so much for the content, which is terrific, but just to see Shiels in action.

Jack Berry - PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism
The PGA gave Jack Berry their Lifetime Achievement Journalism Award at this year's Masters Award Ceremony. We have two videos, one prepared by the PGA and GWAA, which outlines his career, the second is his acceptance speech. Both videos are extremely well done.
http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/jackberry/

Arnold Palmer-The King and Michigan
What would any retrospective be without an inclusion of The King, Arnold Palmer. Palmer has been a frequent visitor Michigan, building five courses here, with his late friend and architect, Ed Seay. We have two shows for you to look at, one we put up in 2005 and chronicled the 50 year anniversary of his U.S. Amateur win at the Country Club of Detroit. The second show finds him recalling his friendship with the late and great Walter Hagen.

CANADIAN TOUR YEAR END HONORS
==============================
Canadian Tour Commissioner Richard Janes joined Rolex Canada President Victor Royce today naming California’s Byron Smith as the Rolex Player of the Year. Smith, 26, captured two events and had five top-ten finishes in just 12 starts to lead the Canadian Tour Order of Merit earning $91,202.

Fellow Californian Spencer Levin has been named Rookie of the Year after a remarkable season that saw him win twice and finish in the top-ten seven times in just 10 events. Levin, 23, was the number two ranked amateur in the world before turning professional. He finished T-13th at the 2004 U.S. Open as an amateur and already has several strong finishes on the PGA TOUR to his credit. Levin has earned fully exempt status on the Nationwide Tour for the 2008 season.

Canadian Rookie of the Year honors went to Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask. The 25-year-old finished 13th on the Order of Merit while picking up seven top-ten finishes in 14 appearances. Other Canadian Tour alumni who have earned the honor include Mike Weir, David Hearn and Chris Baryla.

In the category of honorable mention, one of the most consistent performances of the season came from Canadian Derek Gillespie. The Oshawa, Ont. native and University of Arizona Hall of Fame member finished second three times, landed inside the top-ten five times and led the Tour in birdies and eagles. Gillespie, 29, missed just one cut all season to finish third on the Order of Merit as the leading Canadian with a 69.78 stroke average.

MICHAYWE GOLF COURSE VIDEO NOW ON YOU TUBE
==============================================
As discussed last week, we had the opportunity to work with Don Chiilds, designer of the Michaywe complex and golf course in Gaylord. Childs is a delightful man who has made his mark in the midwest wtih his designs of golf facilities. After two decades he had the opportunity to come back and modernize Michaywe Pines. It is a fast moving show, that still allows us to capture his thoughts on all 18 holes.

ANOTHER JERRY MATTHEWS MASTERPIECE ONLINE-CUTTER'S RIDGE AT MANISTEE NATIONAL GOLF AND RESORT
===================================================================================================
We put up our fifth video of a Jerry Matthews designed golf course this week, Cutter's Ridge. Cutter's Ridge, opened in 2000, is one of two courses at the Manistee National Golf and Resort. The other course, Canthooke Valley was designed byGary Pulsipher and opened in 1994.

Matthews, a Michigan Hall of Fame member and former President of theAmerican Association of Golf Course Architects, has built more golf courses in Michigan than any other architect. When you take into consideration the work he did with his father, W. Bruce Matthews, the total courses designed are in excess of 200.

MEN ARE JUST HAPPIER PEOPLE
=============================
What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can be President. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental-$100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time.Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack.. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. Your belly usually hides your big hips. One wallet and one pair of shoes one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can "do" your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache.You can do Christmas shopping for 23 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes. No wonder men are happier.

Thanks a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for passing on this gender bender.

CHAINS DOMINATE GOLF SPECIALTY RETAIL MARKET
==============================================
Major chains (e.g., Edwin Watts, Golfsmith, etc.) dominate the off-course golf specialty retail market, according to the National Golf Foundation_s annual update of its off-course golf specialty retail store database. With a median square footage of nearly 5,000 square feet, the chains represent one-third of stores and half of total square footage. NGF said that, in total, there are nearly 1,700 stores representing 9.2 million square feet of space. With a median square footage of 2,000 square feet, sole proprietorships account for 55% of doors, but only one-third of the square footage. Multi-door and regional chains represented 12% of stores and 16% of square footage.
