HAPPY NEW YEAR
************************

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. ~Bill Vaughan

New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. ~Hamilton Wright Mabie

For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
~T.S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"
Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever. ~Mark Twain
Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account. ~Oscar Wilde
I do think New Year's resolutions can't technically be expected to begin on New Year's Day, don't you? Since, because it's an extension of New Year's Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year's Day isn't a good idea as you can't eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second. ~Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones's Diary

New Year's Eve, where auld acquaintance be forgot. Unless, of course, those tests come back positive. ~Jay Leno
We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential. ~Ellen Goodman

Time has no divisions to mark its passage, there is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols. ~Thomas Mann
Why won't they let a year die without bringing in a new one on the instant, can't they use birth control on time? I want an interregnum. The stupid years patter on with unrelenting feet, never stopping - rising to little monotonous peaks in our imaginations at festivals like New Year's and Easter and Christmas - But, goodness, why need they do it? ~John Dos Passos, 1917
A happy New Year! Grant that I
May bring no tear to any eye
When this New Year in time shall end
Let it be said I've played the friend,
Have lived and loved and labored here,
And made of it a happy year.
~Edgar Guest

Bill Flemming
Bill Flemming, Harbor Springs resident, was a longtime ABC Sports broadcaster who covered events as varied as the Olympics, college football and cliff diving. He got his start in Michigan at Detroit'sWWJ-TV. Flemming was a friend of Boyne's Everett Kircher for almost 50 years. He helped Boyne get recognition for its skiing and later, golf. He worked with both Everett Kircher and Chuck Moll of Boyne and the great filmmaker, Warren Miller, in promoting skiing. He was also helpful in getting attention to Michigan's great golf. While not directly involved with getting Shell's Wonderful World of Golf to Bay Harbor, he had made the network aware of the superb golf in this part of Michigan.http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2948095
We had the opportunity to cover Everett Kircher's 85th birthday party in the summer of 2002. One of the people honoring Kircher that day was Bill Flemming. Bill Shelton was on hand to capture some of Flemmings thoughts about Kircher, let's watch.

Ed Seay
Seay, formerpast president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and partner with Arnold Palmer in Palmer course design since 1979, passed away on August 14 at the age of 69.

Some of his better known golf courses outside of Michigan includeSawgrass C.C., Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; The Tradition G.C., LaQuinta, Calif.; The K Club, Straffan, Ireland; Four Seasons Resort at Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica; Kapalua Village Course, Maui, Hawaii; Aviara, Carlsbad, Calif.; Old Tabby Links, Spring Island, S.C.; Tralee C.C., Tralee, Ireland; and Adios G.C. in Coconut Creek, Fla.

Palmer Course Design was responsible for five courses in Michigan; King's Challenge near Traverse City, Northville Hills GC, The Legend at Shanty Creek, The Coyote Preserve in Hartland and The Ravines, near Saugatuck. Of the five, The Legend is certainly his most famous Michigan course.

Maureen Orcutt
"Starting in 1922, Orcutt won more than 65 major tournaments. Her first of 10 Women’s Metropolitan Amateur championships came at age 19 and her last, at 61. Her last title of any kind was a club championship in Durham, N.C., when she was 82."

Don Massengale
"Don Massengale was a two-time winner on the PGA Tour. He played on the Tour from 1960 to 1970 and had his best year in 1966. He won the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach by one shot over Arnold Palmer and the Canadian Open, finishing a career-best 27th on the money list. A year later, he got into a playoff with Don January in the P.G.A. Championship before losing at Columbine Country Club."

Johnny Hart
Hart was the creator of B.C., the legendary comic strip that appeared in over 1300 newspapers during its run. Many of his strips used golf as a theme. I loved his strip as did our editor, Terry Moore. As I write this, I curse my decision to not cover the last tournament in 2006. I had a conflict, but I missed the opportunity to see Johnny Hart. Bummer.

"The B.C. Open was a PGA Tour golf tournament that was held annually from 1971 to 2006. In 1971, it was called the Broome County Open. The next year it switched to its current name. In 1973, it became a PGA Tour regular 72-hole money event. It took place simultaneously with the British Open during 2000–2006, so the leading players were not available and it was one of the smaller events on the PGA Tour schedule. The purse for 2006 was $3 million.

It is named after the comic strip B.C., created by Johnny Hart, who was born and raised in Endicott. Johnny Hart's B.C. characters have been used in advertising the event."

DID YOU KNOW?

From the Detroit County Club Website's History Section:

"In May 1918. Alex Ross, brother of Donald Ross, became Club Professional, a position he held for thirty-one years. Membership was increased to 650 in 1922, and it was decided to keep the Club open year round. Thursday night buffets cost $1.25. In 1928, Fred Wardell's offer to build a Caddy House was accepted. It cost $40,000.00 and opened in 1929.
During the Great Depression, the Clubhouse closed for a while. Dues were cut to $150.00 per year, and the number of employees was reduced to twenty-nine. Horace Rackham contributed $21,000.00 toward the cost of a fairway watering system. A swimming pool was constructed.
Gas rationing limited Club activities during World War II. Alex Ross retired as Pro in 1945. The great golf star, Horton Smith, was hired as Professional following his discharge from the Army Air Force. In 1948, he shot the North Course record of 29-33. He served as National President of the PGA of America for three years. In 1959, he was elected into the PGA Hall of Fame and honored at a DGC dinner attended by Bobby Jones.
The next decades saw many changes at DGC. Clem Wolfrom, our treasured Greens Superintendent was hired in 1962. Horton Smith died in 1963, and Walter Burkemo became Club Professional. An electric cart garage, tennis courts and the Crystal Dining Room were added. Walter Burkemo was succeeded by George Bayer, who was followed by Pro Jim Vaughn, who was followed by Pro John Traub and the current Pro is Jon Gates."
