MGN ON THE ROAD
Livonia-The Claddagh Irish Pub
We had a chance to bid golf's Top Quill, Jack Berry, adieu as he was in preparation for what is now his yearly exit to the sunny and warm climate of Arizona. Jack says he plays more golf here, than there, because, yipes! he has household chores.

Before Jack left, he was able to complete his five part series on Golf in Ireland and it will be our pleasure to bring you the shows during his absence. See you in May, Jack.

Traverse City-Grand Traverse Resort
We caught up with Henry Boullery, board chairman. of the Native American Cup and he was in great spirits. Their initial offering of the Native American Cup was considered a huge success and as a result the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians announced the signing of a 5-year agreement to keep the Native American Cup golf tournament at the tribally owned and operated Grand Traverse Resort and Spa through the year 2010.

"The agreement solidifies the great partnership we have with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians", said Boulley.

The 2006 Native American Cup "Presented by Charter Communications" will be held August 4-5-6; and will be played over the championship courses of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa; which is owned and operated by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians.

Information about the organization and the golf event can be found at their newly designed website http://www.nativeamericancup.org.

You can also catch our coverage of the event on that site or http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/nativeamericancup/

MICHIGAN'S SPORTS MEDIA GROUP PUBLISHES BEST GOLF BOOK OF 2005
British Golf Links (Sports Media Group, ISBN: 1-58726-008-5, $85.00) has been named the best Golf Book of 2005 by Sports Illustrated.

The first-ever golf coffee-table book set a standard that many say has never been equaled. As golf exploded onto the sporting scene worldwide, noted amateur golfer and acclaimed writer Horace Hutchinson set out to chronicle the great courses of the home of golf-Great Britain.

Hutchinson profiles over 50 courses, many of them golf's most legendary venues, utilizing historical accounts and information provided by various club secretaries.

Each chapter contains extensive historical information, hole descriptions, yardages, and general hints on playing. This is in itself significant but it is the amazing variety of early photographs, impeccably reproduced, that makes British Golf Links truly unique.

SI journalist Jeff Silverman writes, "Lushly reproduced, this facsimile edition includes an afterword on how these courses have changed, yet it's in seeing the ways they haven't that makes British Golf Links so extraordinary."

THE DOCTOR IS IN: GARY WIREN SET FOR WEST MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW
Representing The Kingsley Club, Dr. Gary Wiren will provide instructional clinics and lectures at the 18th annual West Michigan Golf Show on Feb. 10-12 in Grand Rapids. One of the game's true Renaissance individuals, Wiren is internationally known for being a top teacher, author, lecturer, collector and golf historian. Currently ranked #12 in Golf Digest's Top 50 Teachers in America, Wiren is one of only 31 Master Certified Teaching Professionals in the country.

"I'm excited to be part of the West Michigan Golf Show to not only share my thoughts on golf and the golf swing but also to talk about The Kingsley Club, one of the outstanding golf courses in the country," says Wiren who serves as the club's Ambassador and teaches there each summer. Located just south of Traverse City, The Kingsley Club (www.kingsleyclub.com) is a private golf club that has drawn national honors for its outstanding links-style design and feel. Golfweek magazine ranks the club 22nd in the nation and Wiren says "that's spectacular given all of the great courses it's ahead of."

With a Ph.D. degree from the University of Oregon and a Master's degree from the University of Michigan, Wiren becomes the latest in a long line of nationally acclaimed instructors who have appeared at the West Michigan Golf Show joining such luminaries as Jim Flick, Rick Smith, Dave Pelz and Hank Haney. "Gary Wiren is an amazing and talented instructor who can speak on a wealth of topics, including the all-important cure for the common slice," says Carolyn Alt, Show Manager. "I'm also very pleased to have The Kingsley Club on board as the sponsor of Gary's clinics and appearance at this year's show."

Hours for the Show are 4:00 pm-9:00 pm, Friday; 10:00 am-7:00 pm, Saturday, and 10:00 am-5:00 pm, Sunday. Tickets are $8.50 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-14, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets will be available at the door as well as online at http://www.westmichigangolfshow.com.

GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT AND SPA GETS A MAKEOVER FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Like others visiting GTR, we were wondering where their holiday displays were. Normally, they go up after Thanksgiving, but this year a new renovation of the hotel's lobby has changed all that. This renovation will hopefully be completed before their next big conference, ReMax, in February.

The 1.7 million dollar project will feature a new lobby design that will have contemporary elements. A few of the major features include a redesigned and enlarged front desk, water wall, lobby bar, revolving entry door, and renovated porte cochere.

For those that are disappointed they will miss the holiday lights at GTR, you catch some of their magic at our current Michigan Travel Show, "Holidays in Michigan". Our show stops by the lights at GTR, Detroit and is highlighted by the high stepping dancers and singers of Grosse Point South High School.

As host pro, he golfed with three Presidents and was on site when the club hosted the PGA Championship in 1947 and the Western Open in 1957.

19TH HOLE
Little Johnny is in the 5th grade. Yesterday morning when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up, fireman, policeman, salesman, auto mechanic, etc.

The teacher noticed that little Johnny was being uncharacteristically quiet so she asked him about his father. "My father's an exotic dancer in and works at various bars in the city where he takes off all his clothes in front of the customers.

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took little Johnny aside to ask him,"Is that really true about your father?"

"No," said Johnny, "He plays for the Detroit Lions, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids." Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for this timely tidbit.

ASSOCIATION OF GOLF WRITERS ANNIKA HONOURED AGAIN WITH TOP AWARD
Annika Sorenstam has made further history by becoming the first woman to win the Golf Writers' Trophy twice in the 55-year history of European golf's most prestigious award.

Sorenstam triumphed for the second time in three years, recognition of her continued dominance of the women's game.

Sweden's undisputed world No 1 led the annual poll ahead of US Open champion Michael Campbell and European order of merit winner Colin Montgomerie.

"I was overwhelmed to hear that the Golf Writers have honoured me for a second time by awarding me their prestigious trophy," Sorenstam said. he Golf Writers' Trophy, which dates back to 1951, is awarded each year to the individual, born or resident in Europe, or the European team, who have made the most outstanding contribution to golf in the preceding 12 months.
