AIRLINES TO OFFER WEB ACCESS IN '03

For many busy people, a long airplane flight is one of the last places in life with guaranteed down time, away from the tentacles of e-mail and requests from the office. That's about to change. In 2003, several international carriers will begin offering high-speed Internet access via satellite. For now, it's basically a trial run so the airlines can figure out how much people are willing to pay to get online with their own laptops at 35,000 feet.

DOAK DOWN UNDER

If you recalled Tom Doak's guest editiorial in our last issue of the Michigan Golfer, " A Life on the Road" http://michigangolfer.com/sept02/life.html, his firm, Renaissance Golf http://renaissancegolf.com has been getting a lot of design work all over the world. His annual newsletter indicated that he has business in Bambougle Dunes, Tasmania, Australia; Cabo del Sol in San Lucas, Mexio; Mahukona Resort, Big Island Hawai; Mid Ocean Club, Bermuda and Cape Kindnappers Resort, Napier, New Zealand. I have been to Napier and it is a great resort area in New Zealand. It will be even more so after Tom builds this course.

YAHOO SEES Q4 AD SURGE

Putting solid numbers on recent forecasts that the online ad market is turning the corner, Yahoo! predicted that its ad sales would surge in the fourth quarter, growing at least 22 percent from the same period a year ago.

"The brand advertising continues to grow sequentially," Yahoo! CEO Terry Semel told an audience at the Credit Suisse First Boston Media Week conference on Thursday. "We are seeing a very good trend of growth in that space."

The Yahoo! chief executive said the company was thriving thanks to an overhaul in its advertising sales team in the past 18 months. While the company had it easy during the dot-com boom, the collapse of the market for Internet startups forced the company to focus on traditional advertisers. Semel's upbeat prognosis for Yahoo! backs up forecasts from eMarketer and others that the two-year online advertising drought is coming to an end.

GOOGLE NOW FROOGLE

Google the number one search engine, is in the process of beta testing its newest site Froogle http://froogle.com This new service focuses on products for sale, displaying pictures and the merchants that are selling them. Golf has quite a few listings. I keyboarded both Boyne Country Sports and Carl's Golfland and they had prominent listings. Those who use the web for research might also check out the image side of the web you only have to go to http://images.google.com Publications need to start labeling their photos so the search engine can pick them up. For fun, you can do an ego search and see if you made the cut. I had a shot of myself about halfway through the Swiss Alpine Marathon, may wife and children were also up there. Sorta fun.
