RYDER CUP WEEK FINALLY ARRIVES
by Terry Moore
OK, here are some final Q & A's for the Ryder Cup beginning this week.

What should I bring to the Ryder Cup?

Check out the weather forecast for the day and dress appropriately.
Bring along a pair of small binoculars. You may also bring along your
own bottled water and if you don't intend to sit in the grandstand
bring along a small portable/folding chair. And remember, no cell
phones or pagers. Amen!

I have a ticket for a practice round. How should I organize my day?
Hey, I'm not your personal assistant but I would first recommend
walking the entire golf course. Oakland Hills is a gem so try to get
a feel for as many golf holes as time allows. For sure, check out the
driveable par-four sixth hole either at the tee or at the green. And
it's always wise to catch how the par-fives are playing so visit the
12th hole. After the 12th, mosey over to the par-three 13th hole with
its devilish green. Spend some time and relax a bit at the practice
range. Study the players, tempo as they go through their bag. And
whether or not you plan to buy anything, visit the Merchandise Tent
located between the 2nd and 8th holes.

I have a ticket for Friday so should I sit in the grandstand or try
to follow a match?

With 38,000 people on the course for only four morning and four
afternoon matches, it's almost impossible to follow a match. You'd be
wise to camp out at a grandstand seat in view of a video board. And
be sure to buy a $10 close-circuit radio with headset that will
broadcast the live television coverage.

I don't have a ticket. What should I do?

There's always tickets available depending upon your sources
(corporate and friends) and your checkbook. But at this late date,
it's advisable to take a vacation day on Friday and check out all of
the action on television. At the end of the day, instruct family or
friends to use a large industrial-strength spatula to scrape you out
of the La-Z-Boy.

What American players are on the hot seat this week?

I have to say Jay Haas. He's played so well and been so determined to
make the team as a 50-year-old war horse, it'd be a shame if he didn't
play well. If he does, it'll help to erase those bad memories of his
Oak Hill finish in 1995. And of course, Tiger Woods must play well
and re-establish his aura that has been overshadowed by Vijay Singh this
year.

Who's going to win?

Well as one British writer said at the PGA, the Europeans always seem
to "fight above their weigh" in these matches so expect a close
outcome. But on paper, the U.S. team has the better putters and on
the demanding slopes of Oakland Hills that will be deciding factor. USA:
15 points; Europe: 13 points.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-COMING THIS FRIDAY
"DAVE HILL'S RYDER CUP MEMORIES: AN INTERVIEW WITH JACK BERRY"
This Friday, at the start of the 35th Ryder Cup, the Michigan Golfer
Television Show will bring to our viewers Jack Berry's exclusive
interview with Dave Hill. Hill, was one of Michigan's greatest
golfers and won eleven times on the PGA tour. He played in three
Ryder Cup and just missed out in landing a spot on a fourth. Hill retired
from the game in 1977.

In our first segment, Dave Hill recalls the match at Royal Birkdale
Golf Club and the 16-16 tie that occur with the famous "Concession"
putt that Jack Nicklaus conceded to Tony Jacklin. Dave also discusses
the match that Ken Still and he played against Brian Huggett &
Bernard Gallacher, where after a heated discussion, Hill said to Gallacher,
"If you say one more word, I'm going to wrap this 1-iron around your
head." Despite the fireworks, Brian Huggett, said, "Hill played
absolutely magnificently throughout the week. He held the team
together. He stopped us winning. I mean, he won all his matches."

In our second show, Dave Hills discusses his play at the 1973 Ryder
Cup, which was held at Murifield, Scotland. After flying some 36
hours from a tournament in Japan, Hill developed some severe abdominal
pains and had to pull himself out of most of the matches. Instead of
playing, he assisted the Ryder Cup Captain, Jack Burke. The U.S.
prevailed, 19 to 13. In 1975, Dave Hill returned to Ryder Cup play
at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in St. Annes, England. The U.S.
defeated a British and Irish team 12 1/2 to 7 1/2

In our final Dave Hill's Ryder Cup Memories interview, he discusses
his love of match play and some thoughts about where the Ryder Cup
has been and where it seems to be heading.

The Michigan Golfer is proud to bring our viewers this slice of Ryder
Cup history so nicely presented by Jack Berry and Dave Hill.
