Kentucky Golf Guide
By Art McCafferty

Golf Trails from Michigan to and through Kentucky are I-65 and I-75. As you plan a golf trip southward, we would also recommend that you visit the Kentucky golf site at www.kytravel.com/kygolf.htm The site, while not perfect, does offer a great deal of information.

Louisville and I-65

Of particular note is the 27-hole layout of Quail Chase Golf Club. Quail Chase is centrally located just south of Louisville. Quail Chase works with a number of hotel properties to put together affordable golf packages. The 18-hole rate for weekends is near or at the $40 range. Golfers will find three well-manicured nines, with the South and West courses coming in at 3,300 yards each and the East coming in at a little over 3,500. They have bentgrass greens, Bermuda fairways and sculpted bunkers of white sand. Michigan golfers can also expect an average playing time of just over four and a half hours. Quail Chase features a gently undulating terrain extending through groves of Scotch pine, maple, oak, and dogwood trees.

McNeely Lake and the knobs of Southern Jefferson Country provide an idyllic backdrop for a challenging test of golf. The contact person at the club is Clarke Fenimore. He is an absolute fountain of information on his course and also the entire Louisville area. You can contact Fenimore at (502) 239-2110, or go to the website at www.quailchase.com.

Further south you will find MayWood Golf Club in Bardstown. Bardstown, the locale for Stephan Foster and the legendary "My Old Kentucky Home," is located 21 miles east of I-65 just off the Bluegrass Parkway. MayWood was selected as one of the Best New Courses of 1995 by Golf Digest. The golf course provides a country club atmosphere and is designed majestically across 450 acres of gently rolling terrain. MayWood has three very unique finishing holes. Contact (800) 791-8633 or www.MayWoodGolf.com.

Lexington and I-75

We highly recommend, Marriott's Griffin Gate Resort and Country Club. Located at the I-64 and I-75 junction, take exit 115, south on Newtown Park. A weekend round of golf costs $65-70, however, they have a number of early bird value packages. As a Marriott, you can expect high quality lodging, golf and dining. You will also be dazzled by the restaurant, The Mansion, which is housed in an elegant 19th-century building. The course was designed by Rees Jones and built in 1980. It made the top 75 golf resort list of Golf Digest. Contact (800) 228-9290.

The Bull at Boone's Trace is located about 20 miles south of Lexington. You need to take Exit 97 off I-75 between Richmond and Lexington and look for the signs. Designed by David Pfaff, the course is laid out on beautiful horse country terrain atop a bluff overlooking the Kentucky River. The course offers nice scenery, has bentgrass fairways, tees, and greens. There are five tee locations on every hole for players of different skill levels. The front nine is open, like a links style course, while the back nine is tight and twisting. Contact (877) 662-4653 or www.TheBullGolf.com.
